A new addition: Joe Crede and his wife, Lisa, welcomed new daughter Lucy Renee to the world on Tuesday night. It was the couple's second daughter. Both mother and daughter were doing fine, and Crede was still with his family as of Wednesday. Pablo Ozuna started at third for the second straight night.

"We tried to keep in touch, but I think Joe lives in the middle of nowhere," said manager Ozzie Guillen of Crede's Missouri residence. "They might not have cellular phones where he lives, he lives so far away from everything.

"But we know everything was fine with the baby and his wife, that's what I hear. We expect him any time."

Daddy Crede back just in time

DETROIT -- Joe Crede returned to the White Sox on Thursday morning, but he must have sneaked in a back door because his manager didn't know anything about it before the game.

"Joe is not here yet,'' said Ozzie Guillen, who was immediately corrected. "He's here? Oh, good for him. He didn't say hi to the manager. That's nice. You know, he just traveled this morning. [Pablo] Ozuna played pretty good [at third base]. I'm happy he's here because I wouldn't have minded pinch-hitting for Ozuna [on Wednesday], but I didn't have anyone.''

Crede had returned to his Missouri home Tuesday as pregnancy complications forced his wife, Lisa, to give birth to the couple's second child three weeks early. The successful delivery was done by cesarean section.

Crede reported the 6-pound, 14-ounce girl, named Lucy, was in good health.

"I'm glad he's here,'' Guillen said. "I'm glad his family's fine. I hope his little baby keeps him hot because he was swinging the bat real well, and he'll be ready for [today].''

Crede has been the Sox' hottest hitter lately. Before he left the team, he had an eight-game hitting streak and was batting .404 (21-for-52) with six home runs and 13 RBI in his previous 16 games.

"I had the Internet on my cell phone, so I was always keeping up,'' Crede said. "They definitely didn't have it on TV there. It was tough. I wish I was here playing, but at the same time, I had to be there with my wife and make sure everything was OK.''

What started out as a worrisome situation ended up being a remarkable event for Crede's entire family.

"Her brother had a baby the exact same day, Tuesday night at 7,'' he said. "Ours came at 2, only three doors down. Unbelievable. Theirs was due around that time, [but] ours wasn't due until Oct. 19. So it was 22, 23 days early.''
