Traveler1776
In response to CWSOX45, we are not yet in the playoffs due to today's win. Only one scenario exists where the Sox could fail to make the postseason. This is what would have to happen: Sox lose remaining 4 games. CLE wins remaining 4 games. BOS wins tomorrow and takes 2 of 3 from NYY. NYY wins tomorrow and wins 1 of 3 from BOS. In that scneario, CLE would win the Central at 96-66 and BOS, NYY and the Sox would finish with identical 95-67 records. NYY and BOS would play for the AL East title and the loser would play the Sox for the Wild Card. If the Sox lost to the loser of the NYY-BOS title game, they could fail to make the playoffs. This is all moot, b/c the Sox will win tomorrow.
Balta1701
Damn, I'm kinda sad that I missed all the fun and angry math while at class. Yes everyone...we win tomorrow and there is no way we cannot win the division even though the magic number will be at 1.
GreatScott82
Its official. If we win tommorow CSN just reported we win the Central division. BECAUSE even if Cleveland wins there final 4 games they will end up w/ a matching 96-66 record and SINCE the Yanks and Red Sox play each other also- it would be impossible for both AL East teams to match that 96 win mark. And since the White Sox own the head-to-head record (11-5) the White Sox would win the Central division and the Wild Card winner would go to Cleveland. So its official- our Magic # is 1 ! We win tommorow- we are the Central Division Champs!!!!!!! Woooohoooooooooooooo
TLAK
(White Sox Josh,Sep 28, 2005 -> 09:17 PM) nope it happened in 01 with Houston and St. Louis. St.Louis won the Central because of their head-to-head advantage and Houston won the WC. (TLAK, Sep 28, 2005 -> 09:15 PM) You're thinking football, pal. There are no tie breakers in baseball. If they finish with the same record they play off, 1 game. There is a coin flip for home field, and Sox already lost it, so it would be in the Jake. I stand corrected Josh, the head to head indeed comes into play if both two teams are ahead of everyone else for the WC, something I did not consider. Thanks for the insight! If the Yankees win out, that means the Red Sox lose their last 3 games, and are knocked out of the wild card race with the Yankees winning the east. The Yankees winning the East also removes the Yankees from WC consideration leaving just us and Cleveland for the WC. And if we end up tied for the division and the wild card, it has already been well documented that the head to head record comes into play when both teams are guarenteed a playoff spot. Hopefully that makes sense.

Head to head does matter, especially since the red sox lost yesterday. Im glad someone posted the truth.
