Greg Hibbard
From MLB.com: What if the Indians and the White Sox are tied in the AL Central? Next Monday (Oct. 3), the Indians would host the White Sox unless those two teams finish with the best records in the AL. In that case, there wouldn't be a playoff game. Both teams would make the playoffs, and the first-place team is determined by the two teams' head-to-head record. As of Tuesday, the White Sox led the season series, 11-5, and are guaranteed of the better record. correct me if I'm wrong, but Yanks can finish with 97 wins, so 96-66 and 96-66 for the White Sox and Indians will NOT be the two best records in the AL.... Greg Hibbard
What I'm saying is that I still don't understand how we clinched the division with the way that the MLB has worded the rules.

Gene Honda Civic
QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Sep 29, 2005 -> 03:31 PM) What I'm saying is that I still don't understand how we clinched the division with the way that the MLB has worded the rules. We clinched the division because we have 96 wins. -- Only one of the AL East teams can finish with 96 wins, making them the AL East champion. -- If Cleveland finishes with 96 wins, they our the wild card due to are head-to-head record. I'm tired of writing this... If you don't get it... too bad. Edited September 29, 2005 by Gene Honda Civic
nitetrain8601
Well if the Yankees get the most amount of wins possible, 97, they'll win that division. Boston would end up losing the division and missing the Wild Card.

Greg Hibbard
because the "best records in the AL" clause apparently doesn't matter.

THEWOOD
from mlb.com "Chicago's victory reduced its magic number to one, clinching a tie for the American League Central title. But even if the Indians were to sweep the three-game set at Jacobs Field this weekend, thus clinching a playoff berth, the White Sox would win the tiebreaker for the AL Central crown with an 11-8 edge in head-to-head play"

GO CELEBRATE! Your original quote was wrong. A 1 game playoff for a division crown ONLY comes into play when the loser is out of the playoffs. The only scenario where that can happen is if the loser is runner up to the WC team. The best the Indians can do is 96-66, & the worst the White Sox can do is 96-66. If the NYY go 97-65 they would win the ALE & not the ALWC.

Win 1 game, and only NY could tie them with 97 victories, but that would require them to win out. I don't know how they would determine Homefield throughout in this situation, but who cares. 96 wins should be enough.

We are assured of Game 1 and 2 at home though right against somebody because the Angels can't catch us for most wins or even tie us.
