Early Look At Your Team's Draft Class

One of the main reasons I created this thread was to give credit where credit is due. SoxBadger called Carnell Williams a Walter Payton type player since day one and so far, SB was all over that one. He defended Carnell as a HB and proclaimed he would trump all other first-round HBs because of his running style, power, explosiveness. Hats off to SB on what looks to be a dead-one assesment.

 

So, let's take a look around the league. Who is your team? Does your team have a rookie that we can already call a can't-miss success? Is there someone out there that slipped much further than he should have? Are you absolutely irate your team wasted a pick on someone you think is going to flop?

 

Hell, is this too early to even put out inatial reports? s***, some rookies haven't played one down of National Football League football yet.

 

In any event, what's shaking? Any eye openers?

It's still too early even for Cadillac, given that he's already banged up.

Dominique Foxworth and Darrent Williams have been pretty good for the Broncos. Williams has been a big spark on improved special teams and they helped out without Bailey yesterday. A big part of this draft class was stealing Washingtons number one for next year which I hoped would net Matt Leinart. Unfortunately, Mark Brunell bouncedback and the pick will likely be mid to late.

Loving It.

DeMarcus Ware = Is still very raw, but has that natural ability. Gave away 3 off-side penalties on the weekend. Will be a star though.

Marcus Spears = Haven't seen a lot from him, but I won't expect to, he's there to clog up the 3-4, has a couple of sacks, looks a good solid pick.

Kevin Burnett = Hasn't started cos of a knee injury, but if you saw how Bradie James was against the run yesterday, Burnett will be starting very soon.

Marion Barber = Thought he was a good pick, as of yet, not so. Perfect example yesterday 3rd and 1, instead of powering for the 1st, danced to the side and got tackled just before the 1st down line. Got chewed out by Parcells.

Chris Canty = The steal of the draft so far. Already making plays, and really should be starting ahead of Greg Ellis right now.

Justin Berrault = Out for the year injured with microfracture surgery, but looked a ballhawk at SS in TC. Unfortunately he's got 1 Roy Williams in front of him.

 

Based on this season so far, I'd say our needs are at LB, FS, WR and RT.

Hey now, I've been saying Carnell was a special player and the best back since before the combines even happened. Ronnie Brown is coming on now and will be a very good back also, but Carnell will be one of the greats. Just something about him, personality, skills, whatever it is, he just has "it" and always has.

 

Also my Troy Williamson being the best receiver of the class is looking decent, he's deadlocked with Braylon right now. I am very suprised at Mike Williams lack of production I have to admit, I expected more. 25 yards at this point is just sad.

 

As for the Steelers rookies.

1st: Heath Miller, limited throws to him, but he's catching everything and blocking very well, great outlet for Ben.

2nd: Bryant McFadden: providing good depth at CB, nickel starter

3rd: Trai Essex, providing very nice depth, very good pick

 

Undrafted: Greg Warren, Steelers present and future long snapper, great signing.

Well, judging by what I've seen thus far, Marlin Jackson is going to be one of the better CBs in the league for a LONG time to come, and he hits like a MACK truck.

 

After that, a LOT of question marks:

 

-Will Kelvin Hayden develop into the player he has the potential to be? If so, he'll be a steal rather than the reach he was made out to be.

 

-What will become of Vincent "Sweet Pea" Burns? He's obviously too light to play DT, and he doesn't have the skill set to play DE in this system. A situational pass rusher is a bad choice in the 3rd round of the draft.

 

-How soon will Dylan Gandy be ready? I think this guy will be a good one, as the Colts felt he was worthy of a 4th round selection, and they have had nothing but success with developing and replacing good guards. As of now, Ryan Lilja appears to be a weak link, and the sooner Gandy gets in, the better.

 

-What will Jonathan Welsh's role be? I think he would make a great MLB, but the Colts brought him in to play his natural position of DE. Is this in possible anticipation of the departure of Robert Mathis in free agency?

 

-Will Tyjuan Hagler stay healthy, and if he does, what type of player will he be? I've heard nothing but good things about this guy, and he seems like a perfect fit for the Colts' system, but there's some reason he was a 5th rounder. If it was lack of size, then the rest of the NFL made a BIG mistake giving Dungy another good LB, and at the position where one is most sorely needed. This, of course, is all pending his return from a sports hernia suffered in training camp (he should return in October/November).

 

-Can Dave Rayner take the place of the most accurate kicker in NFL history? It's obvious the Colts want rid of Vanderjagt after the season, or simply don't have him in their cap plans for the future. Either way, they feel Rayner is their man for the future, as he already has kickoff duties, and attempted about half of the field goals the team tried in preseason.

for the most part i've liked who the bears picked. this week three of those guys (bradley, harris and orton) will start, and another guy (benson) will play significant minutes.

 

whether or not these guys are long-term successes remains to be seen, but there were many years with hatley and wannstedt picking guys where guys got drafted then fell off the face of the earth.

 

jerry angelo has made a fair amount of mistakes as bears general manager, but his drafts have been pretty good. not saying there haven't been some busts in there, but everyone has that.
