Classes in session for another season

The recruiting mania surrounding Glenbrook North guard Jon Scheyer and Crane guard Sherron Collins held center stage for the last seven months, but as practice starts across the state today, it's time to turn to the next local phenom: Simeon guard Derrick Rose.

 

While Collins and Scheyer have little left to prove, Rose has a load of pressure on his shoulders. The 6-3 junior is expected to have a breakout season and live up to his billing as the top area guard prospect since Isiah Thomas.

 

Rose and his Simeon teammates aren't allowed to talk with the media, but coach Robert Smith made an exception at Nike Camp in July. Rose answered many of the questions that have built up over the last two seasons.

 

Rose's first game last season at the Curie Shootout was one of the most-hyped debuts in recent memory.

 

"It was packed in there,'' Rose said. "That was the biggest crowd I had ever played in front of. It was scary. I'm not gonna lie, I was scared.''

 

Rose didn't show his fear. He scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds and had five steals in his first varsity game.

 

Rose built a reputation as a winner in grammar school. He was undefeated in title games when he began his varsity career at Simeon. The trend continued at the varsity level. Rose led the Wolverines to the title at the Public League Holiday Tournament in December. He managed to get Simeon to the United Center in March, where the Wolverines fell in the city-title game to Westinghouse, ending his championship- game streak at five.

 

"We were too inexperienced, we didn't know how to control things,'' Rose said. "I'm used to playing in all the championship games, but this year I didn't. I played in the city, but not in the state.''

 

Many observers questioned longtime Simeon coach Bob Hambric's decision to play Rose at the sophomore level his freshman season. The Wolverines made it to state without him, but fell to Carbondale in the opening game.

 

"I think I could have made a difference, but there wasn't anything I could do but watch,'' Rose said. "I felt like I could play, but I respected my coach for not putting me up there. He said it would take away from the other kids, school-wise. He said he wanted all of his kids to get to college, so that's why he held me back.''

 

The most dramatic moment of Rose's first varsity season came in the semifinals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. Rose sprained his right ankle catching an inbounds pass with five seconds to play in a tie game. He limped to the free-throw line and hit the second of two free throws to seal the win, falling to the ground in pain after the shot. His teammates carried him off the court.

 

"That was probably the most pressure shot I ever took in my life,'' Rose said. "I had to make the second one for my team, and I did.''

 

Rose's right ankle is his Achilles heel. It hampered him in four different games.

 

"It's always the same thing,'' Rose said. "I sprain it just by dunking or doing basic layups. I'm scared if I try to dunk that I'm going to re-injure it, so I try not to.''

 

Many area scouts, and at times even his coach, thought Rose had a tendency to play too unselfishly. It was a trend that continued at Nike Camp.

 

"I've been trying to be a point because it seems like I'm not gonna grow anymore,'' Rose said. "I saw Deron Williams play; I can see myself as him. He can score anytime he wants to, but as long as his team is winning, he's OK with it.''

 

Unlike many of today's high school stars, Rose has a sense of history. He has heard the stories of Simeon great Ben Wilson.

 

"I heard he came to [Nike Camp] when he was only a sophomore,'' Rose said. "He came here and ended up being the No. 1 player by the time he left camp.''

 

Rose also is aware of the perceived connection between Simeon and Illinois.

 

"There must be some connection,'' Rose said. "A lot of guys in the past went there. Calvin Brock went there, Bryant Creamer the football player. I talk to Calvin a lot, ask him how he's doing in his classes. He likes it a lot down there.''

 

At Nike Camp, Rose named Kansas, Arizona, North Carolina and Illinois as possible college choices.

 

"Schools like that,'' Rose said. "Any guard-playing school would be a good fit."

 

DePaul and Virginia also are said to be in the mix, but it's still early in the recruiting process.

 

Rose is considered a top-five prospect in the national Class of 2007.

 

Simeon's schedule is full of high-profile games across the Midwest this season, which should give Rose a chance to carve out a national reputation.

 

Public League basketball director Cyrus McGinnis has hinted that North College Hill (Ohio) could face Simeon in 2007.

 

That matchup would pit Rose against O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker, the consensus No. 1- and 2-ranked players in the Class of 2007.

 

"Rose's national reputation is already as high as it can possibly be, but it gets further enhanced with every elite matchup that Simeon encounters,'' Roy Schmidt of Illinois Prep Bulls-Eye Report said. "A matchup against College Hill and Mayo could leave no doubt as to who is the top prospect in the Class of 2007.''

Duke No. 1 in AP; Tar Heels, Jayhawks left off Associated Press

 

Duke is back at No. 1 in The Associated Press' preseason college basketball poll while defending champion North Carolina failed to even make the Top 25.

 

Kansas, the preseason No. 1 last year and another regular in the poll, also was not among those teams ranked Monday.

 

The Blue Devils were a runaway choice for No. 1, the sixth time they have started the season atop the rankings.

 

North Carolina becomes the first defending national champion not to be in the preseason poll the next season since Kansas in 1988-89. The Tar Heels lost their top seven scorers from last season, three to graduation and four underclassmen as NBA lottery draft picks.

 

Bolstered by the return of All-America guard J.J. Redick and all-conference center Shelden Williams from a team that went 27-6 and reached the third round of the NCAA tournament, Duke received 61 first-place ballots and 1,785 points from the 72-member national media panel.

 

Texas, which has four double-figure scorers back from a 20-11 that was beaten by Nevada in the NCAA's opening round, was second with six first-place votes and 1,652 points. It matches the highest ranking in school history.

 

Duke and Texas meet Dec. 10 in East Rutherford, N.J.

 

Kansas had been in the preseason poll every year since 1991-92, being out of the top 10 only three times. North Carolina was in all but one of the last 20 preseason polls, only three of the rankings out of the top 10.

 

The Blue Devils had a seven-year run of at least one week at No. 1 snapped last season, reaching as high as second.

 

``I do expect us to be the best team in America,'' Redick said. ``I expect that every year. That is just the confidence and mentality that we have to have.''

 

Connecticut, which will play without suspended point guard Marcus Williams until Jan. 3, was third followed by Michigan State, which had four first-place votes, and Villanova, which was No. 1 on one ballot.

 

Oklahoma was sixth and Louisville, which moved from Conference USA to the Big East, was seventh. Gonzaga, Kentucky and Arizona rounded out the top 10.

 

Boston College, which left the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference, was 11th followed by Memphis, Stanford, West Virginia, Alabama, Syracuse, Illinois, Wake Forest, UCLA and Iowa.

 

The last five ranked teams were George Washington, Nevada, Indiana, Maryland and Iowa State.

 

The preseason poll started with the 1961-62 season. UCLA has the most No. 1 rankings with eight, followed by Duke's six and North Carolina's five.

 

The Blue Devils have been ranked for 167 consecutive polls, dating to the preseason poll of 1996-97 season. Kansas had the second-longest streak but the Jayhawks are out of the rankings for the first time since the preseason poll of 2000-01, a span of 93 polls.

 

Kentucky now has the second-longest active streak at 80, dating to Feb. 12, 2001.

 

The record streak for consecutive polls is 221 by UCLA from the preseason poll of 1966-67 through Jan. 8, 1980.

 

Texas was ranked No. 2 for one week in December 2002.

 

``We don't talk about it,'' coach Rick Barnes said of the lofty ranking. ``I think it's a compliment to our program and these players. But we realize it's preseason.''

 

The Big East leads the conferences with five ranked teams _ Connecticut, Villanova, Louisville, West Virginia and Syracuse _ the first three in the top seven.

 

The ACC and Big Ten each had four teams in the preseason Top 25.

 

Four of the teams in the Top 25 weren't ranked at all last season _ Stanford, UCLA, Indiana and Iowa State. This is Iowa State's first time in the poll since the final poll of 2000-01.

 

Kansas, Wake Forest and Illinois were ranked No. 1 last season. The Illini ran the last 15 weeks and were a unanimous pick six times.

 

The season starts Tuesday night with No. 16 Syracuse playing Bethune-Cookman in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

 

The Maui Invitational on Nov. 21-23 has four teams in the top 10 (Connecticut, Michigan State, Gonzaga, Arizona) and No. 24 Maryland in its eight-team field along with Kansas, Arkansas and Chaminade, the Division II host school.

I didn't like how it sounds that he really favors that bad right ankle of his...hopefully that is not as serious of an issue as that article kinda describes.

 

As most CPL players go their recruiting is always wide open till the summer before their senior year. Then things will heat up. At least both of our teams are still on the list.

So you're saying he just started to recruit illegally once he went to Kansas? The thing I don't get when Illini fans b**** that Self is cheating now is that it would also implicate that he cheated in signing Deron, Dee, etc.

I have a question for Depaul fans.

 

As a Virginia alum, and huge UVa basketball fan, I am interested in hearing your opinions about Dave Laiteo from a fans point of view. I've heard a lot about him from a media (mine) point of view, but I'd be interested to know a fans point of view. I followed him enough last year with the prospect of him being a candidate if Gillen was fired, and read enough to know that he is a no-nonsense coach who will have them rebounding and playing good defense. But what about offense? I saw some awfully low scores in Depaul's games from his team last year. Is it just because it's a ball control offense, or did you guys not have very many good offensive players beyond Greer and Diener (he was a shooter at least; and I hope I got those two players right).

 

So in general. What did you think of him and what should we be expecting down here?

My Predictions for the CvCC:

 

Syracuse Regional

Syracuse over Bethune-Cookman

Cornell over St. Francis

 

Syracuse over Cornell

 

Lubbock Regional

Texas Tech over San Jose State

Portland over Georgia Southern

 

Texas Tech over Portland

 

Winston Salem Regional

Wake Forest over Mississipi Valley State

George Mason over UC Irvine

 

Wake Forest over George Mason

 

Gainesville Regional

Florida over St. Peter's

Albany over Oakland

 

Florida over Albany

 

Watch out for the Florida bracket. Florida will have trouble making it out of there. Three of the 4 teams are quality ball clubs while Florida immediatly has to deal with the loss of its 3 stars. St. Peter's features one of the best players in the nation in Keydren Clark, so even a 1st round exit for Florida is possible. Albany is the favorites in the American East, and like St. Mary's last year, I could see them driving the event promoters nuts. Florida SHOULD still be able to prevail though.

 

Championship rounds

 

Texas Tech over Syracuse

 

I expect big things from Jarrius Jackson and Texas Tech this year. Meanwhile, 'Cuse has to quickly replace over 36 PPG from their starters, including the production of one Hakim Warrick. Not only that, they think they will do so by Gerry McNamara. He is consistantly one of the most overrated players in the nation. Not only that, some dare say he and his 34% shooting is the best shooter beyond the arc. Texas Tech shall roll.

 

Wake Forest over Florida

 

This one is easy. People are vastly underrating Skip Prosser and Wake Forest. I believe they have to chance to do better than they did last year. Florida on the other hand will struggle to replace a team that wasn't great to begin with last year.

 

Syracuse over Florida

 

No, I refuse to give Florida any love. 'Cuse can use this to set an example to the rest of the Big East, because this wins going to look better on paper than it actually was. I expect big things from Terrance Roberts in a blowout of the Gators. Cuse will need him to be great this year, atleast if they want to stay in that Big East exclusive 4.

 

Wake Forest over Texas Tech

 

This, folks, is going to be one hell of match-up. If they do indeed both get here, you better be watching. With one of the best backcourts in the country playing for Bob Knight, I expect mega talented guard Justin Gray to struggle a bit. However, Tech will have no answer for Eric Williams inside. Look for super Recruit Kevin Swinton to have a big game as well.

Good analysis, I'm not so confident in Tech as you are. Jarrius will be very good, but the season will likely depend on how much Martin Zeno worked on his game in the offseason, he's probably the only pro potential guy on the roster, and could be special. Also, I think you will see freshman somewhat unheralded recruit Dazzmond Thornton make a nice splash, I bet he will be matched up with Eric Williams if both teams advance that far. Also undersized PF/SF freshmen Dior Lowhorn will likely make a nice debut, he's a great athlete at 6-6 210.

 

Also, I believe Kevin Swinton will be out for all the games...
