SnB
I completely agree with you jas. I've been saying it for what seems like the entire season, but we are not the 6th best team in the country, period....and we never were. And yes, after completely underestimating iowa the entire year, I've finally come around and I think they are better than we all think they are. They've just seemed to come out of nowhere this season. Besides that awful loss to MSU, they've been the most solid team in the big 10.

illinilaw08
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 5, 2006 -> 12:28 PM) Guys, like Iowa and some of the better Big 10 teams, Illinois doesn't have the talent to consistently win games. They aren't the team from last year. I know Krush and SNB realize this just like I realize this about my Hawkeyes. Now could either of these teams (along with OSU) make a run deep into the tourney, sure, but none of them is going to win the tourney. Illinois lacks the weapons on offense because if Dee Brown is slowed down they don't stand much of a chance. Its hard to win when you have that going against you. They have managed to do a good job over the course of the season defensiely, which will help them win a lot of games and make the tourney and finish up as one of the best teams in the big 10 (and they still have a total shot at the Big 10 title, they are 1 game behind Iowa and still get to play em in Champaign). Plus Iowa plays down to their competition and could easily get upset by a team like NU. We also still have a home game against MSU, which is not going to be easy. The Spartans match up well against us and Paul Davis seems to be the one guy Hansen has trouble stopping (ie, Hansen who I think is the best defensive big man in the big 10). That said notice I don't include MSU in that mix. MSU hasn't shown up consistently and I think its because they have lacked some defensive intensity at times because in the long run playing consistent defense will allow you to win a lot of games (to be great you'll need offense as well, but if your team can defend you'll find ways to win often). But MSU (in big games) tends to step up that level of intensity plus Izzo is a master at getting his team going down the stretch. They are the lone team in the big 10 that could make noise and make the final 4, imo. I don't see them doing it, but its a definate possibility. But back to my point, too many Illini fans are over-rating the team based on last year. You guys are probably one of the more over-rated teams in the country right now. Its not a knock cause you all have continued to win, but you aren't the 6th or 7th best team in the country (I give Weber and your guys credit for battling and getting there though). Just like GW isn't the 10th best team in the country. You can't get that distinction when you don't play ANYBODY. Plus cause I'm bias I will continue my note that Iowa (as of today) is the most under-rated team in the country. They still have a lot to prove though. I agree to a certain extent. For one thing, Illinois is clearly nowhere near as good as they were last year. Now that being said, there are really only 2 good teams in the country this year... Duke and UCONN. I'm not saying that I expect Illinois to go to the Final Four, but someone has to, and I fully expect there to be 1 Big 10 team there (Iowa, MSU... I'm not sure which one). I also think this is going to be one of the hardest NCAA tournaments to handicap in recent memory because there is a ton of parity this year. I'm a big fan of this parody cause it gives so many more teams a shot and makes the tourney that much more interesting. Also, mark my words, Duke will not win the national championship. That will be Uconn. I actually think Duke may go down earlier than people think because I think they have more weaknesses than the typical #1 team in the country. As I type this Kansas is getting clocked by OU. It was a close game in the 1st half but the 2nd half has been all Sooners.

Rowand44
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 5, 2006 -> 01:33 PM) They are coming on strong. Very. As far as parody goes, Duke is not a great team if they face the right opponent they could be gone in the sweet 16. People might think I'm crazy for this second team but the two best teams I've seen play this year are UCONN and Florida.

People might think I'm crazy for this second team but the two best teams I've seen play this year are UCONN and Florida. Talent wise I put Memphis way up there too. They have some insane athletes and they make some amazing plays but the few times I've watched them they seem to at times play too fast and with that they don't play disciplined and it leads to some mistakes and easy baskets for the other team. If Callipari can get them to play a little more heady they could be very dangerous come tourney time. On a sidenote, Kansas is on a big time run and has tied the game back up. They were down by 15 or 16 at one point with about 7 or 8 to go in the half.

Chisoxfn
Kansas wins by 1 coming from 16 down in the 2nd half. Huge win for the Jayhawks. It looked like the route was and the Jayhawks won what could be the decisive game come selection Sunday (a win against OU will be real nice for there resume). WilliamTell
Going back to that Iowa/Michigan game. Iowa shot like 65% from the field, they usually play great at home, but that was just fantastic. The first first 8 or so minutes belonged to Michigan, the rest belonged to Iowa. Haluska was on fire. I'll just throw that out there as a conversation starter once heads gets back from the game. ISU wins 96-79. Holy s***, they played like a team actually deserving of an NCAA berth. Stinson with a triple-double, 5 guys in double figures and the complete demolition of Andy Osborn, for some strange reason. A win at Kansas State on Wednesday would set up a fun game at the Phog between ISU and Kansas again. The ISU @ Kansas games are always fun as well. Wow. Stinson with 24 points, 9 or 10 boards (they announced 10 at the game) and 10 assists with only 2 turnovers. Rahshon Clark with 24 points and 14 boards. And Julian Wright is still having a s*** year, but he's going to develop into a solid ballplayer. s*** year for Julian? He's a freshman playing a new position, and he's shown enough to earn playing time and start for a talented Kansas team. He's never going to be a big scorer, but he does a lot to help his team during a game. If you ask me, he's the missing link on the Illini team this year. He'd easily be the best interior passer they'd have, and would possibly force the offense to not just sit around a fire up three pointers the whole game. whitesoxfan101
QUOTE(fathom @ Feb 5, 2006 -> 04:01 PM) Exactly, and one thing Julian does an amazing job at is moving the ball. He can't shoot at all (but then again, neither can Randle). I'm not sure how much of a different he would make. Julian is a very good passer, but the Illini need another player that is a double threat at the guard. Chester can pass, but can't shoot. Jamar can REALLY shoot, but isn't there passing yet. At times, Rich can pass, but he's mostly a 3 point shooter/pump fake to get a mid range jumper guy. And in unrelated news, I'm not going to miss James Augustine. He's had a great great career, but I'll always remember him as an underachiever (which just shows how talented he is, since he is STILL going to leave as the Illini's 1st ever 1,000/1,000 player).
