Frank Thomas contract rumor

Konerko to Boston makes little to no sense, and I hope the rumors are false to be honest. I love the guy, but I can't imagine seeing one of either Ortiz or Konerko on the bench for 20 games during interleague play and if the situation arrised the World Series.

Word currently is Beltran for Manny. ugh.

Doesn't Manny not want to go to the Mets anymore?

As for Konerko and Boston, I can't see it. He's said repeadtly, even though he was born there, he doesn't see himself living there. So I'd say it's either us, the Angels or another West Coast team like the Dodgers.

Of course if the Angels do sign him, then maybe the likes of Casey Kotchman and Kendry Morales do become available. But they've got to re-sign the likes of Molina (4 years @ 7M, ouch), and maybe try to dump Steve Finley on the Yankees before they do anything else.

Manny would go to the Mets but Beltran might not allow the trade to Boston. Anyways, I don't see why Konerko should impact Frank's return. Paul is not a DH and Frank is not a 1B. If its a money issue here, Frank will NOT make any more money than any DH we'd bring in. Carl Everett's act has pretty much worn thin this year so I see us trying to keep Paulie, telling Carl to see ya, and have Anderson/Gload/Thomas (obviously when healthy) playing or the OF and allowing one of the other OF guys a rest for a day by DH'ing

Who cares if he wants to go to the mets? If they want him gone he will be going wherever they decide.

I still think the sox are not as big of a lock to resign konerko as others do. He will most likely recieve a four year deal with an option and not a three year deal with an option. I also expect him to make on average twelve million a year, which in other words, overpaid. I know there are people here that want him signed no matter the cost... but three years into that deal when he cannot walk, let alone run, they will be regretting it. If his hip is as bad as people make it out to be i am scared by it. Short-term i see him helping us... but down the road i see him f***ing us over ( not his fauly)

If the angels end up dumping finley it will not be to the yankees... one of their main goals for this off-season is resigning matsui, centerfielder ( that does not suck), and as always starting pitching.

Paulie for 5 years 65 million?

Five guaranteed years would be awful. Three years guaranteed and two option years would be ideal. But what i see the sox offering is four years and an option for the fifth.

This is where I saw the Manny story. I think it was mentioned on Rotoworld that New York wasn't his 1st option, not 110% sure though. I doubt Omar Minaya would trade for someone who wouldn't want to be on his team, especially when he makes more money in the short - term;

If Ramirez does request to be traded, Genske says "his preference would be Anaheim. He also still loves Cleveland, and would go back there." Another possibility would be Arizona, if Boston would take some of the contracts the Diamondbacks are trying to move, including Troy Glaus and Luis Gonzalez. Texas was in play at the deadline.

The Yanks could get desperate on a center fielder. I've heard Robinson Cano for Torii Hunter (which is actually a pretty smart deal for both sides), and even Aaron Rowand's been mentioned in a deal for Gary Sheffield (but that'll never happened). Anyways, they'll definitely have a new CF, and if they can't get any of tha bove, if they can get Finley for practically nothing, they may do it, and hope he rebounds. The Yanks also have 7 starting pitchers under contract for 2006, with A.J Burnett and Kevin Millwood (who they don't think can handle the pressure in New York), I actually think they may stand pat for once, unless they can work a trade deal.

As for Konerko, the contract length will be a very important issue. Of course he could DH in the future, which could help with those injuries possibly. It could end up biting us in the behind like the Tim Salmon deal, but unless the Sox have a good contingency plan in place (Brian Giles or Chad Tracy), I think we've just got to bite the bullet and bring back Paulie.

If the Sox happen to win the WS next week, Frank has no other goal in his career but to reach 500hrs. He needs 52 more to get there, or roughly two years worth of service left to reach 500. I don't know if Frank will stick it out if he has a ring on his finger. If he does, I don't think he'll look at it as a financially lucrative endeavor and settle for a very small contract. I don't see any relevance whatsoever between Frank and Paulie. Money regarding Frank won't be an issue, JR will do what's necessary to keep Frank in Chicago if he wants to reach that 500hr plateau.

I've been screaming it feels like all year to bring back Frank to a Juan-Gone type deal...where he is only guaranteed the league minimum next year, but with incentives that he reaches, he can get in upwards of around $5-8 mill.

That is pretty much what I see happening. He will get about a million base, and then insentives which could make up the difference between his what he could have made this year and the million dollars.

I agree with wite and 2k5, I think both sides want to keep Frank here and after the 3.5 buyout, an incentive-based deal works for everyone.

I think Frank's market value is obviously down, and he seems to be appreciating what he has here in Chicago. I'm not sure he always did, but he does now.

Konerko's Dad believe Paulie will test FA. So I think it's doubtful the White Sox will get him signed. What's the track record for teams to retain their own players once they test FA? It can't be very good.

As for Frank try to put it in perspective. He had about 2 productive months for the White Sox this year. So he earned about 1/3rd of his 2005 pay. The rest is a gift. Then you have the $3.5M buyout. If the White Sox offer him a base of say $3.5M for 2006. He still comes out with about $17M for at best 8 months of production. That's not bad at all.

The White Sox payroll sure has grown quickly. W/out Everett+Konerko+Thomas I read it's expected to be at $77M. They figure with Paulie it jumps to $90M. How many of you thought we would be at $90M in 2006? I sure didn't!

If Konerko does sign a $65M/5 yr with the White Sox I expect it to be backloaded & include deferred $$$. I firmly believe if a player is not willing to do that to help the ballclub remain competitive then the team is better off without him. It's a clear sign the player is putting $$$ before the team & I just don't think that type of player often leads a team to the World Series.
