I miss sandlot baseball, professional athletes being normal people who were good at a game, kids being able to play in the streets, and decent music being on the radio.

Do kids actually do this any more? Choose up sides, four a side, pitcher's hand out at first, center and right fields are foul. Fun times, indeed.

Keeping with the theme of the thread, I miss only having to spend $20 a week to fill up my gas tank and complaining when prices went over a dollar a gallon...

I was waiting for that to come up. I remember when I was in my senior year of high school (1996) I was paying like 1.04 a gallon to fill up my tank in the SW burbs.

I'm just 19, and we definitely still would do this during the summers now. We wouldn't even need that many people. We'd use pitcher's hand as a rule for outs at first, and then we'd have ghost runners, etc.

We'd do the same w/ football. We'd just need 3 people. One would be a QB, one would be on offense (no running plays), and another on defense. Two-hand tap, two completions equaled a first down, and the length of the boulevard was a TD.

Neighborhood sports = the best.

Not where I live.  Its all pick up basketball.

when i was in grammar school, during the summer we'd have coutnless games in my small backyard. There were certain "rules", like hitting it to the deck was a double, the rock was 2nd, the 3rd post from the end was 3rd.

My dad wasn't too happy when all the grass died in the "batter's box"

We maybe played with 4 or 5 people everytime. That's something i really miss.

Oh yeah, and we'd also play roller hockey in my driveway, in the narrowest driveway ever.

Good call mike.

I miss Saturday morning cartoons. Eating cereal, not doing anything on Saturday until the afternoon...

Also,

Before the Internet or the AIM

Before semi automatics and weed

Before playstation2 or X-bOX

Before the 5 hours of homework you put off every night...

Way back...

I'm talkin' bout hide and go seek at dusk.

Red light, Green light.

Playing kickball & dodgeball until your porch light came on.

Mother May I?

Red Rover

four square

Hula Hoops

Running through the sprinkler

Happy Meals

Getting the privelage to sit in the front seat of the car

Christmas morning...

Your first day of school

Bedtime Prayers and Goodnight Kisses

Climbing trees

Getting an ice cream off the ice cream truck

A million mosquito bites and sticky fingers

Jumpin' down the steps

Jumpin' on the bed

Pillow fights

Runnin' till you were out of breath

Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt and you almost peed your pants

Being tired from playin' all day

Your first crush...

Rainy days at school meant playing "Heads up 7-Up" in the classroom

Remember that?

I'm not finished yet...

Kool-Aid was the drink of the summer

Giving your friends a ride on your handlebars or spokes

Wearing your new shoes on the first day of school

Class Field Trips

When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there.

When getting high was swinging on the swingset

When $5 seemed like a million, and another dollar a Miracle.

When your parents took you to McDonalds and you were so cool.

When Toys r Us overuled the "mall"

I want to go back to the time when...

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!"

"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "monopoly"

Catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening

It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.

Being old, referred to anyone over 20.

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties.

Nobody was prettier than Mom

Nobody was cooler than Dad

Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better

It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big people"

rides at the amusement park.

Getting an inch of snow was a dream come true.

Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare"

Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.

Catching fireflies in a jar, and then “accidentally” releasing them inside the house.

Drinking directly from the creek that ran out back just because we were warned never to do that.

My parents saintly acceptance of the quantity and variety of varmints I caught or bought to keep as pets.

First best team – Washington Senators – “First in war, first in peace, last in the American League” – whatever that meant, but it sure sounded funny.

Cigarettes at 25 cents a pack. All time favorite – Half & Half brand with filters. They smelled great! But I sure don’t miss that three-pack-a-day habit.

Sometimes we'd play baseball 2 on 2.

Right field was out except you could hit the ball over the track in right for a HR, also ground balls to the right side were fair, we played pitcher's hand with ghost runners and we used a teeball. We'd play it at the park which had a track running all the way around it so if you hit the ball over the track it was a HR. The problem with the track was; it was about 150 feet down the left field line and then the track went straight out so it was about 400 feet to dead center.

Wow...robinventura23...I got tears here pretty much. I can't add much more than that. I started the damn thread, but that was everything I wanted to hit. A little (very little) tweaking here and there, and you have yourself a pretty great "childrens book", in all honesty. Take that as a HUGE compliment.

The idea that my own kids might think like that. Wow. My Dad used to have thick jet-black hair. It's grey now. But I always thought he looked just like Superman.

Pitcher's hand and ghost runners. There were ALWAYS arguments on whether the ghost runner would have been fast enough to score...

And football in the street was fun too. Two-hand tag always meant people were getting pushed into cars and knocked into the street. Bruises and screpes were like badges of honor...

The adventures of Pete and Pete

Salute your shorts

Hey Dude

Rocko's modern life.

Are you afraid of the dark?

I'd kill to see some of these shows again.

Man, these were the greatest shows ever. Also I'd include Captain Planet and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Smear the Queer (or Maulball if you prefer)...man that game was fun.

Those remotes with four buttons...two silver, one black and one orange and they made that *click* sound everytime you would press them.

Getting my dad a beer during ball games (and having a sip).

One rubber ball and one spray-painted box on a brick wall and pitching a nine inning game.

That feeling you got when you would sit with a girl you "liked" before you really knew what "liking" a girl meant.

Oh yes, and All-Time Quarterbacks.

Wow. Great, great post.

I don't know if you came up with that stuff yourself or got that from somewhere else, but I swear it made my eyes well up with tears. Not for myself, but for my kids. Kids today have none of the freedom most of us had, and I can't think of anything sadder. Every activity kids have now involves the parents. It's so sad that parents in my neighborhood sit outside and watch their kids (10 & 11 year olds) play. That may sound odd, but kids need to have a little freedom.

My oldest kid is six. First grade. I hope he has some of the good times I did. I hope he thinks nobody is cooler than me or prettier than Mom.
