bjm676
Closest vote since 1998. Willis finishes a close second. Player, Club 1st 2nd 3rd Points Chris Carpenter, Cardinals 19 12 1 132 Dontrelle Willis, Marlins 11 18 3 112 Roger Clemens, Astros 2 2 24 40 Roy Oswalt, Astros 2 2 Chad Cordero, Nationals 1 1 Andy Pettitte, Astros 1
whitesoxfan101
I thought for sure Willis would win, seeing as he had a better ERA, more wins, and Carpenter's September was pretty miserable. But alas, Carpenter overall still had quite a year, so congrats to him.

Had Carpenter not got hurt, I think the '04 WS could have gone differently, and at the least, would not have been a sweep.
RockRaines
Carpenter is good and all, but Clemens should have gotten the award. Much better pitcher last year IMO
Yoda
It was a very tough race. I had forgotten all about Chad Cordero. His 47 saves led the majors. Willis had a phenomenal season and The Rocket probably had the best season of his career. But overall, IMO, Carpenter does deserve the CY. He had only 5 loses throughout the whole season. He was healthy and when he was on he was almost unhittable.

Much better pitcher last year IMO Pettitte was better as well.
WilliamTell
Couldn't go wrong with either Carpenter, Willis, or Clemens.
Antonio Osuna
Meh, looks to me like Willis is being penalized for being on a team that was weaker this year.

He pitched more innings than Willies yet gave up less hits, lees walks, and 43 more K's. A 21-5 record looks better than a 22-10 record in my opinion. GoodAsGould
I thought Willis deserved it more but all is well.... and do you think part of Carpenter only having 5 losses is his team scored about 100 more runs than the Marlins... I guess you can say samething for Clemens but Willis has the wins to back up his performance.

Agreed completely This is not mentioning how unbelievably unhittable Carpenter was from June through August. His totals during that time - 12-1 1.45 ERA 0.80 WHIP 5.75 K/BB in 130.1 IP - are hard to fathom. Reminds me a little of Santana last year, except Santana was just unbelievable last year...almost unhittable. He had WHIPs of under 0.70 in a month twice last year, and had a BAA of under .100 in July, while having an ERA of 0.45 in September. Not surprising is that those were the two months his WHIP was under 0.70.
