Felix
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 10:02 PM) If it means anything, Levine was on 1000 and said KW was giddy because teams were willing to talk trade already and Levine says the Sox can afford Delgado and Konerko without a salary dump of sorts. Think of all the HR they each would hit in The Cell..
Gene Honda Civic
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 09:06 PM) Once again showing that Levine knows nothing. Levine needs to lay off the crack. He's been wrong countless times before. Did Reinsdorf just raise the payroll by $25 million or something? Look, attendence was up 20%. We hosted 6 playoff games, during which the Sox weren't required to pay rent/split amenities with the ISFA. We split MLBs take for all the division series between 12 teams. We split MLB's take for the LCS between 4 teams. We split MLB's take for the World series with the Astros. In each of the last 3-4 years, the Sox have put profit (as listed by Forbes) directly back into payroll.

He's been wrong countless times before. Did Reinsdorf just raise the payroll by $25 million or something? Yeah, I doubt this would happen. I really don't see it. I think Thomas will be our DH next year with PK or Delgado as our 1B. I doubt our payroll just got jacked up that high in just one season. Usually, that would happen the offseason after the year we won the World Series because the season after the WS season is when teams really reap the benefits of winning the championship. Without a salary dump of some sort, we would need a $100 million payroll to re-sign Konerko for market value and add Delgado via a trade. He's been wrong countless times before. Did Reinsdorf just raise the payroll by $25 million or something? Let's say Kong gets $13 million, that's +4 million. Let's say we get Delgado and the Marlins pay $3 million per year of that. Thomas + Evertt last year were making $11 million. Kong = +4 million Delgado = +13 million Thomas + Evertt = -11 million Rowand = -3 million (assuming he's traded for Delgado) Total = + $3 million. Now include raises and Garland + A.J. + Crede arbitrations and such our payroll doesn't increase by that much.

I just don't have the Sox projected payroll for '06 at hand, and think that Kong and Delgado can be put on the same roster for under 95M
Kalapse
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 09:06 PM) I believe (just my gut feeling) that the starting point for our payroll is about $90M next year. If we kept Konerko and added Delgado, next years payroll would be roughly $100M (this includes estimated salaries of: Pierz, Crede, Gload, Harris, Viz, BMac, Cotts, Jenks, Garland, Anderson and Konerko) without subtracting any player's salary from the current 25 man roster. subtract rowand's $3.25 and the payroll = $96.75 subtract Rowand and Marte's salaries of ($3.25M + $2.25M) $5.5M and the payroll = $94.5M I really don't see this as being realistic. Before you even listed that figure with Rowand and Marte subtracted, I thought the ceiling was about $95M. There was a really crappy article by Mark Gonzales yesterday or today in the trib, saying the Sox would have trouble affording Konerko with the other contracts they had to pick up. I just laughed. Payroll, within reason, is not going to be an issue this season.
Kalapse
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) Got to figure that the Marlins will pay $3 million of the salary. We also lose Evertt and Thomas who combined made $11 million last year. The $11M was taken into consideration. The figures are extremely realistic becuase the players salaries for the '06 season were used (though some had to be estimated). You can figure in the $3m if you want and it's still over $90M. The actual team payroll came out to $100.605M for next year with Delgado, Kong, Rowand and Marte all added to the payroll.
SSH2005
Do people really believe our payroll is going to raise from $75 million to $95 - $100 million? Edited November 12, 2005 by SSH2005
maggsmaggs
If we could add Delgado, it would be so sweet. Not only are we getting a guy whose season average is .284 ave, .393 OPB, .559 Slug, .952 OPS, 38 HR and 121 RBI's, he would also be chasing 400 homers which could boost attention and attendance. He would instantly make us favorites for the series again if we had both Kong and Delgado.

fathom
Um, are some people forgetting what we'd have to give up to get Delgado? It would probably cost the Sox Contreras, and put us without a 5th starter again.
Kalapse
I estimated the amounts for these players: Pierz: $4 Crede: $2.5 ARB Gload: $400K Harris: $400K Viz: $1.5 BMac: $400K Cotts: $400K Jenks: $350K Garland: $7 Anderson: $350K Kong: $13M +Delgado: $13.5 The team payroll came out to $99.252M then you could subtract Rowand ($3.25) and Marte's ($2.25) salaries A lot of the $400K players could be less next season. nitetrain8601
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 09:25 PM) Um, are some people forgetting what we'd have to give up to get Delgado? It would probably cost the Sox Contreras, and put us without a 5th starter again. I don't think so. The Cubs, even though the Marlins want Pie, will most likely give up Rich Hill(a starter with lots of upside) for Pierre. That leaves the Marlins needing a CFer (Rowand). They also need relievers to bridge the gap between their starters and Todd Jones(assuming they resign him) which would be Damaso. Now we might have to throw in a prospect like Rogo, but I would be fine with that considering we would have Delgado and Kong.

Well, part of the reason they are trying to trade Delgado is for salary dump so they can get a FA starter like Weaver or Millwood. So I don't think it's unrealistic to think: Rowand, Marte and Tracey for Delgado. Maybe a little better than Tracey, but certainly Kenny will not trade the big 5 starters.
