fathom
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 01:48 AM) Jim Hendry should be fired for giving him a contract like that. Eyre is good but no middle relief pitcher should be making that kind of money. Shows what Eyre values though. They overpayed for him. It really is Mike Remlinger, part deux. White Sox Josh
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) It really is Mike Remlinger, part deux. Eyre is better than Remlinger however this guy is pretty much a lefty specialist. You don't pay a Left Specialist 4 million a year. It's only 2 years with a buyout. So the buyout must be worth around $1.5 million. YIKES!

The thing that I don't get is that most of the top hitters in the NL Central are righties. I don't think lefty specialist was such a glaring hole for them. Oh well....I'm very thankful the Sox didn't sign him for that money.

fathom
This is round 1 of Cubs panic mode 2005. I expect them to overpay for quite a few players this offseason.

Oh well....I'm very thankful the Sox didn't sign him for that money. yeah. If you look at his numbers Alou would match him up against Lefties. He pretty much pitched to lefties in part because Alou loves matchups. However Eyre's career stats aren't very good and if Baker misuses him like he has done with so many bullpen pitchers than it's gonna be a long year for Eyre. So, of course, Dusty used him against lefties.

I'm still on the floor laughing.

fathom
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 02:20 AM) Tell them that Glendon Rusch, Neifi Perez, and Scott Eyre will earn a combined $10.5 million in 2006. Tell them that they could have signed Brian Giles with that money instead of three mediocre players.
SSH2005
<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry, it's a combined $9 million but the point still remains. It's even more disgusting when you look at the three players' total contracts: Glendon Rusch: 2 years, $6 million Neifi Perez: 2 years, $5 million Scott Eyre: 3 years, $11 million That's a combined $22 million dollars for three mediocre players. What will Giles cost? 3 years, $30+ million? Edited November 18, 2005 by SSH2005

This is straight from Cubs.com: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/new...t=.jsp&c_id=chc The Chicago Cubs added the lefty to the bullpen mix on Thursday, signing Eyre to a two-year contract worth $11 million with a player option for a third year. This could be the worst reliever contract in the history of the MLB. Edited November 18, 2005 by SSH2005

3E8
2/11 is downright funny. I wonder if it is a typo, or they are trying to wreak havoc on the market.
AnthraxFan93
Its a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd for a total if option is picked up of 11 mil

White Sox Josh
QUOTE(whitesoxfan1022 @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 10:06 PM) yea espn said 2/11, but maybe its a typo it's 2 years at $10 Million plus a $1 Million buyout or club option. Chisoxfn
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) Heres the best part: Not only are the cubs fans loving this move, they are begging for AJ Burnett as well. Wow, they could easily take the all time MRI record with that rotation. I don't get why everyone's knocking the Eyre move. Just becuase the Cubs made a move, doesn't mean its a bad one. Scott Eyre was really good last year and if he pitches like he did this past season, he's definately a great pickup, even if they did pay a mill or year too much (and if he pitches like he did last year, 3 million a year is more than fair). Chisoxfn
QUOTE(timotime @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) agreed. when you are talking about bang for buck, eyre is not where it's at. i would honestly stick with marte rather than throw big money that could contribute to getting us a heavy bat. Thats why Marte is a guy you don't trade unless you get some good major league pieces for him. Holy crap, as I type this I hear Don't Stop Believing on King of the Hill. This song will always have a special memory to me.
