To put it in perspective...

2006 White Sox Salaries:

Dustin Hermanson:  $2M

Cliff Politte:  $1.2M

Neal Cotts: $330,000

Bobby Jenks:  Not available, but likely under $1M

Pretty sure their combined 2006 salaries will barely crack $4 million.  And if Eyre's contract is what they are saying it is, he might make more than our big 4 combined next year.  Ouch!

Jenks = rookie = less then half a season =

Hermanson will earn $3 million in 2006.

Cubs are also gonna lose a draft pick out of this.

LOL.  That's funny.

Remember, it's is Sabean. And Eyre has not yet been offered Arbitration.

Sabean has until Dec. 7 to fill out the paperwork to steal the Cubs pick. I know he'd skip the paper work if he was getting a 1st rounder, but since the Cubs are in the top 15 draft positions, they can't lose their first rounder. Still, unless the Giants are able to lose their top pick somehow, that would be 3 picks(Their first rounder, a sandwich pick, and the Cubs second rounder) in the top 50-some spots.

I thought I heard somewhere that the Giants were changing philosophies, and were actually going to use their 1st round picks this time (might have been BA, dunno). Whether that actually happens, we'll have to wait and see.

Even I am baffled at times by the idiocy that is the Chicago Cubs. I would say Eyre is going to be Remlinger 2.0 for them, but I don't think he will even be that good.

Funny part is, wait until the media blitzkrieg we see tomorrow praising this as a great singing, when in reality it is simply Jim Hendry being a desperate jackass.

The Cubs need a shortstop and an outfielder. Right now, they have superstar Neifi (and Cedeno) at SS and an outfield of Murton-Patterson-Hairston. Ick.

So, pretty much, they need to land one of Giles or Furcal. Or else, someone via the trade route -- and I doubt there are very many short-stops on Furcal's level available, so that narrows it down even more.

Juan Pierre, maybe? Gosh, for Florida's sake, I'd love to see a Felix Pie for Juan Pierre type deal, or Pie/Hill for Pierre. Then, Kenny sneaks in, grabs Delgado for Rowand and Marte, and everybody (okay, not everybody, just me) is happy. :)

CHICAGO (AP) - Free-agent reliever Scott Eyre agreed to terms on a three-year, $11 million contract with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.

Eyre will earn $3 million in 2006, and $4 million in each of the following two years. The deal includes a $1.5 million signing bonus, and a no-trade clause and the third year is the player's option. Other incentives in the deal could add another $2.4 million over the three years.

Eyre's contract calls for up to $300,000 a year in performance bonuses. He will receive $100,000 for 70 appearances and an additional $200,000 if he pitches in 80 games. There is also wording that would give Eyre additional money should he become the Cubs' closer.

What an awful contract.

This makes them a better team, no doubt about it. Could the money have been spent more wisely, however? Certainly.

But that is the beauty of having so much money to throw around. They can overpay for a player and still have room left to sign somebody else. This is the sort of flexibility we sadly don't have.

His numbers tend to say this was an abberration, not the norm...

Eyre could make $5 Million next year if he reaches some of those bonuses.  A lefty specialist making $5 Million.  Inf***ingcredible.

Eyre is not a lefty specialist, look at his splits from last year.

I liked this quote, "Scott Eyre's agent had heard from nearly every team regarding the free agent left-hander, but in the end he decided to go to the team that looked like it was having a good time."

What, a good time? Um.

If anyone knows how to find a good time.....well, that man is Denny Neagle. :bang

NSBB is killing this move.

"The history of baseball, especially the past 10-15 years, is littered with marginal relievers who have had 1 or 2 good years, surrounded by several seasons of garbage. We're talking about a guy who has been less effective out of the pen than Kyle Farnsworth, who was run out of town after supposedly being too inconsistent for somebody making $1.5m. Would anybody have been willing to go 3/11 on Farnsworth? I really liked the guy and wouldn't have considered it."
