Kalapse
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 12:08 PM) NSBB is killing this move. "The history of baseball, especially the past 10-15 years, is littered with marginal relievers who have had 1 or 2 good years, surrounded by several seasons of garbage. We're talking about a guy who has been less effective out of the pen than Kyle Farnsworth, who was run out of town after supposedly being too inconsistent for somebody making $1.5m. Would anybody have been willing to go 3/11 on Farnsworth? I really liked the guy and wouldn't have considered it." After the money that Eyre got, Farnsworth should be looking at even more money strickly based on his 100MPH fastball and slider. The Cubs may have set a precedent. White Sox Josh
QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) Eyre is not a lefty specialist, look at his splits from last year. I liked this quote, "Scott Eyre's agent had heard from nearly every team regarding the free agent left-hander, but in the end he decided to go to the team that looked like it was having a good time." What, a good time? Um. those stast were an aboration. He is really just a lefty specialist.
Heads22
He really is just someone not deserving of an $11 million contract.
DBAHO
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Nov 19, 2005 -> 05:38 AM) those stast were an aboration. He is really just a lefty specialist. This season he pitched 40 innings against righties and 28 innings against lefties. The only year he pitched more against lefties was in 2002. Not really what I would call a lefty specialist (although of course he's going to pitch a little better against lefties).
CWSGuy406
He also got a no-trade clause? Did I hear/see that correctly? If so... :headshake
SSH2005
He also got a no-trade clause? Did I hear/see that correctly? If so... :headshake <{POST_SNAPBACK}> http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/new...t=.jsp&c_id=chc The free agent reliever signed a two-year contract with the Cubs on Thursday night that includes a player option for a third year. If the option is picked up, the total package is worth $11 million. The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, and will pay Eyre $2.7 million in 2006 and $3.5 million in 2007. The player option year in 2008 is for $3.8 million.
The Critic
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 06:00 PM) He really is just someone not deserving of an $11 million contract. The FA market is kind of thin. Guys are going to be overpaid. Doesn't make it a wise move, I'm just sayin'...
SoxFan562004
This is an OK move by the Cubs because their bullpen was absolutely horrible last year (I don't care if there's stats that show they weren't that bad, I had the summer off while studying and watched quite a few Cubs games, that bullpen was bad). They needed something to improve it, and Eyre is an OK pitcher. But that shows you the difference between the Sox and Cubs bullpen, Sox wanted to bring him in to be the 2nd left out of the bullpen, while the Cubs are bringing him in to be their number 1 lefty and stabalize it. This is another typical Cubs move... the team needs a drastic improvement in their bullpen, Billy Wagner is a FA, so instead they go after Scott Eyre and act like he's the second coming. This is why Cubs have so many "dissapointing" signings because they get overhyped and are asked to do way too much. IMO Eyre is a solid pitcher, but asked to come in and stabalize a garbage bullpen is way too much to ask, and when he has an average season he'll get ripped. But hey, he can cry himself to sleep on a pile of money.
