kdhargo
The Marlins and Rangers are close to completing a trade that would send Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Texas for first baseman Hank Blalock and a top pitching prospect, two baseball sources said Friday night. Felix
http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=43376 And Blalock is a third baseman, not first (although he might switch if traded to the Marlins and they trade Delgado) Edited November 19, 2005 by Felix
timotime
i never would have thought of that trade, but that doesnt sound too bad for either team. that will be interesting to see how it works out next season.
Greg The Bull Luzinski
I don't care how good Blaylock is, I don't think you ever should trade good young pitching like Beckett. Particularly since this would leave 1 of 5 pitchers from a world series team two years ago. If the Marlins trade Delgado or Blaylock for another starter it makes a little more sense. AnthraxFan93
OO I hope this becomees a reality, I am in an NL only Keeper league Blalock would look nice on my roster! Its nice to see Texas realized that they need to trade one of their Corners in order to get pitching. As for FLA, I had a feeling that with Joe G their they would go youth, for the first 2 years, looks like that is what they are doing, retooling for another run. I could see Blalock moving to 1b, with Cabera(sp) being 3b. This would also mean that Juan Pierre and Delgado will be moved for SP help.. Good move for both teams. But Blalock is ALOT more consistent than Beckett. You dont think he is still just riding his performance in the WS a bit? It seems to me he is oft injured and a little inconsistent. I could see where FLA is looking for young offense. Cabrera and Blalock would be an extremely young 1-2 punch for the next several years. With castillo in front of them, and whoever is leading off, that is a pretty tough lineup to face, not to mention then having Delgado...Not a bad move IMO. I dont really want to burst your bubble, but Blalock's numbers away from TBIA are horrid. .707 OPS (including a .611 OPS on the road last year), compared to a .942 OPS at home, and since his first full year as a starter, his numbers have gone down each year. Also, Dolphins Stadium is a pitchers stadium, which would kill his numbers.
SSH2005
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...e.7867bd30.html Sources: Rangers set to deal Blalock, Danks Trade with Marlins would bring ace Beckett, third baseman Lowell The Rangers were on the verge Saturday of dealing for a long-desired No. 1 starting pitcher, Florida ace Josh Beckett, in a four-player trade involving All-Star third baseman Hank Blalock, major league sources confirmed. Rangers sources said Saturday that a deal, which has reached ownership level, would likely be done by Monday. The trade would send Blalock and top left-handed pitching prospect John Danks to the Marlins for Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell, team sources said. Hitters from the AL going to the NL nornally don't do well.. and then I thought about him playing in FLA, which kills hitters numbers, the guys in my league will over pay for him..Good Deal! SSH2005
I wonder if the Sox could be involved in this trade? http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...rlins_1120.html The original proposal also called for Texas to send Florida one of two pitching prospects — John Danks or Thomas Diamond, both first-round draft picks. But the Rangers' front office has balked at losing either pitcher and is now trying to find a way to finish the deal. One option is for Texas to dangle first baseman Adrian Gonzalez as trade bait to a third team for pitchers to flip to Florida. The Rangers and Marlins also have discussed scenarios that include Pierre in the deal. Marlins get Hank Blalock, Damaso Marte, Aaron Rowand, & a pitching prospect from the White Sox Rangers get Josh Beckett & Mike Lowell White Sox get Adrian Gonzalez & Juan Pierre

It seems fairly reasonable to me and it makes a lot of sense according to our needs. We need a lefty 1B/DH power hitter and Ozzie wants more speed in the #2 hole. Adrian Gonzalez and Juan Pierre would provide both. Ozzie could then move Iguchi down to the sixth spot in the lineup where he could be more of a RBI producer. 3E8
I don't see all that much power production from Gonzalez in the minors. 69 home runs in 5 seasons? We'd get more offensively next year if Gload started I'd say. Gonzalez would be a move for the future.

DBAHO
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 20, 2005 -> 06:28 PM) His 2005 AAA numbers were pretty awesome. I wouldn't mind something like the following lineup: You have to remember the PCL is a real hitters league. .338/.399/.561 splits aren't bad at all. But Gonzalez is 23 and hasn't shown a lot of power as 3E8 said. He is very similar to someone like Conor Jackson though. The power will probably eventually come in the future. 3E8
I think this is moot anyway because the Rangers are going to convert him to a corner outfielder. He'll probably take Mench's spot.

3E8
A deal still isn't done, but the Rangers have reportedly agreed to include either John Danks or Thomas Diamond along with Hank Blalock in order to get Josh Beckett from the Marlins. Mike Lowell would also be included, of course. Apparently, the Marlins are also strongly considering Boston's offer, which likely includes Hanley Ramirez and either Anibal Sanchez or Jon Lester. Other clubs, such as Detroit, may also still be in the running. Nov. 21 - 1:18 am et Source: Dallas Morning News

We are getting a minor leaguer who hasnt proven a thing and a player who is going to be a FA and really had an off year. The Rangers get a WS MVP and a starting player, the marlins get one of the best LH pitchers available at a good price, a top tier starting CF'er and an all-star GG caliber 3B who mashes the ball, and a prospect? I hope your xbox didnt fry when you input this trade.

I would like the looks of a: Beckett Buehrle Contreras Garcia McCarthy This would assume you are willing to put up the $$ to sign Beckett, I'm not sure of his status, but I would assume he is FA after '06? Considering we are in the same boat w/ Garland, I'd much rather lock up Beckett for the long term at big $$ than Garland. I'm not sure if a trade could be structured in this way, or if Beckett would sign long-term here, but if you are going to go for the big move, I say don't get involved at the margins, go for the good players in the deal, guys like Beckett only come up so often... This is probably an X-Box worth idea as well, but I'd rather see us actually get something if we are going to give up any key players (Garland,Rowand,Marte).... I like the rotation of MB Garland Count BMAC Garcia way more than the one with Beckett. I see Beckett as inconsistent, oft injured and soon to be overpaid. Garland is much more consistent, and eats more innings on avg.
Kalapse
Am I the only one that doesn't like the idea of swapping Rowand for Pierre? A trade that includes the two would more than likely also include 1 or 2 more players from the Sox' side (Marte + spect). Pierre is a huge downgrade defensively from Rowand especially when it comes to arm strength seeing how I can throw a ball further with my feet than he can with his arm and this would also give us 2 defensive liabilities in an OF that was extremely solid last year. Even for what Pierre does, steal bases, he isn't all that effective at it: '01 - 46SB/63A = 73% '02 - 47SB/59A = 80% '03 - 65SB/85A = 76% '04 - 45SB/69A = 65% '05 - 57SB/74A = 74% Not great. Is another leadoff hitter with 0 power really worth the defensive downgrade it would cost you?

I like the rotation of MB Garland Count BMAC Garcia way more than the one with Beckett. I see Beckett as inconsistent, oft injured and soon to be overpaid. Garland is much more consistent, and eats more innings on avg. I think Beckett is just coming into form though, and has more upside than Garland. Really, their career numbers don't compare, Beckett is the better pitcher, Garland is the more reliable/healthy one. You go with Beckett if you want to take a chance on a #1 ace, Garland will be a very good #3 or #4 guy. I think with the number of guys on our staff that eat up innings like Buehrle and Garcia, you can take a chance on getting 170-180IP out of Beckett. He has increased his IP each of the last 3 years while lowering his WHIP and BAA each of the last 3 years. Basically, I agree that we shouldn't be trading starters like Rowand,Crede or Uribe unless the upgrade is much better, these guys form the core of our defense and no pitcher is going to do too well if the guys behind him don't catch the ball. If we are going to trade big names, or pitching, I would like to get pitching back in return. I would take a chance on something that allows us to spin out Garland and prospects (or Marte) for Beckett, only if he is signable, but not just to bring us a marginal upgrade like Pierre.
