George Best RIP

Recommended Posts

My favorite bit from that excellent piece:

Opinion was divided between those who saw Best’s career as a shameful waste of talent and those who were simply grateful to have had the opportunity to see him grace the game. Best himself insisted that he alone had the right to be disappointed that his career did not last longer, and that he was not. He was particularly fond of relating in that context the tale of the night porter who brought a bottle of champagne to his Bloomsbury hotel room soon after Best had quit Manchester United.

Confronted by the sight of the former Miss World, Mary Stavin (one of four winners of that accolade to share Best’s bed), spilling out of her negligee and by the piles of cash Best had won in a casino earlier that evening scattered on the bed, the porter pocketed a £50 tip and asked if Best would mind him asking a question: “Where did it all go wrong, George?”

A question I have always asked: If you are reasonably happy and content in your life and lifestyle, and Bestie was certainly more than reasonably content, how are you a failure if the worst that can be said of you is that you're a non-conformist?
