PLANO, Texas -- Former Dallas Cowboys receiver and current ESPN studio analyst Michael Irvin was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his vehicle during a traffic stop, Plano police said Sunday.

Irvin, a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for speeding in Irving after being pulled over Friday afternoon for speeding in Plano, the Plano Police Department said. Police spokesman Mike Johnson said he didn't know what kind of paraphernalia was found.

Irvin paid a fine on the speeding ticket and posted bond on the drug paraphernalia possession charge. He was released about an hour after he was pulled over.

"We are reviewing the facts of the situation and have no comment at this time," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.

In 1996, Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges.

Irvin, a member of three Super Bowl championship teams with the Cowboys and known as "The Playmaker" during his 12-year career with Dallas, retired in July 2000. He has been paired at ESPN with veteran host Chris Berman, Tom Jackson and Steve Young on the main set of Sunday NFL Countdown since 2003.

Irvin holds Cowboys records for catches (750), receiving yards (11,904) and 100-yard games (47), including a team-record seven in a row in 1991.

In September of this year, Irvin and former Cowboys teammates Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith were added to the Ring of Honor together, a recognition of the players most associated with the Cowboys' last Super Bowl titles.

What a stooge. Way to build a strong case for the hall of fame right when they are deciding whether or not to let you in, Michael.

Anyone want to lay even odds that it was a crackpipe?

I would hate for him to lose his studio job...he is so good and all

LOL. I think Steve Young would share your sentiment.

I for one wouldnt mind not having to hear him "tell it like it is".

When the police busted into the room during his 96 conviction...the first thing he said was "Can I tell you who I am?"

I actually watched Gameday this morning (usually I'm grocery shopping before football games start), and I thought he seemed more glazed over than usual. Now I know why.

I remember on Gameday when they were talking about drugs because of some player instance (probably Moss), and he admitted how after the year ended the coach would bring them to like some island or forst preserve cabin type deal, and they'd party it up and get drunk and high and all that. Berman told them it took a lot to admit and say that and they almost made out

Should be a HOF'er. One of the best 5 receivers in my lifetime (I'm 23). SHouldn't be on my tv. He said on the DP radio show the other day (as told to me by a friend) that the Jets-yes the Jets-have more playmakers than the Bears. He was raving about the Jets, coming off of two losses with a combined 57-3 score. This is obviously a related story to that claim

Does anyone actually believe his explanation ?

Im sure Michael and his lawyer believe in his explanation. And they are generally good at making a judge believe in his explanations. But everyone else who exists? No, they dont believe in his explanation.

we'll see. he said today he was going to take a drug test. if he passes i believe his explanation. if not i don't.

i won't let my opinions of him as an analyst or player influence my thinking on this. i'm sure a lot of people are stoked he got busted, which they are entitled to. i'll judge this issue on its own.

agreed. He was a drug addict and i think he still has kids. He hasn't been in the news about this and he has seemed to put his life back together.

yeah. it's believable to me that he could have been back on the stuff. he's an addict. anyone who's been through a program will tell you are always an addict, it's an everyday battle, hence the "one day at a time" rhetoric.

but i also get a little surprised at how people react to stuff like this. some folks seem to take some joy in it which i don't quite get. that's just me though. not saying i'm right.

i hope his story is true. it would be a better ending than just another worn-out old athlete busted and struggling to cope with their missing glory.

No, it makes no sense. He patted his brother down, took the crack pipe off him, put it in his car, and forgot about it. Whatever. If you have a history like that, you don't put yourself in that situation. He's an idiot. Final Answer.
