Yankees in the market for relief

Yankees GM Brian Cashman says, "I haven't called anyone about any relievers." But don't expect him to sit still for long. The Yankees began the week with a 4.83 bullpen ERA, fifth-worst in the AL. Trade possibilities include Jason Grimsley (Royals), Kelvim Escobar (Blue Jays), Buddy Groom (Orioles), David Weathers (Mets), Ugueth Urbina (Rangers) and the Marlins' Braden Looper and Armando Almanza. . . .

The Giants' bullpen will collapse if the team's starters don't work deeper into games. After 41 games, the rotation ranked 10th in the NL in innings pitched, and four Giants relievers -- Tim Worrell, Joe Nathan, Felix Rodriguez and Scott Eyre -- were on pace to make between 77 and 89 appearances. The expected return of LH reliever Jason Christensen in two to three weeks will help, but even if closer Robb Nen were healthy, the bullpen's workload would be disturbing. . . .

The Astros' rotation is in even worse shape than the Giants', ranking last in the NL in innings pitched. However, the team might be in a more flexible financial position than club officials initially believed, making the addition of a starting pitcher possible. Free agent LHP Chuck Finley would be a perfect fit, and if he fails to return to the Cardinals, it's possible his next team won't lose a first-round pick if he signs after the draft is completed June 4. The removal of draft-pick compensation would increase the interest of the Angels and Red Sox, among other clubs. . . .

The Dodgers and Cubs are deep in relievers, but neither is likely to trade off that strength unless an urgent need arises. The Dodgers would love to add power and could afford to part with Paul Shuey, Paul Quantrill or Guillermo Mota, but they don't want to limit their ability to get to closer Eric Gagne.

The Cubs haven't discussed trading Antonio Alfonseca and are adamant about keeping Juan Cruz. They recently considered demoting Cruz to Class AAA, but manager Dusty Baker opposed the move. Mike Lowell probably is a more realistic third base target for them than Shea Hillenbrand; the Cubs' farm system is deep, and the Marlins likely would be satisfied with minor leaguers in return. . . .

Could the Sox be a good match with the guys they have, and the fact they have guys in the minors too?

Call me crazy, but I would not want to get rid of Marte. He is our best pitcher the last year and a half.

You will never be able to replace him, and he makes no money.

I would be much more willing to part with Wunsch. I am sure the Yankees would be interested in Gordon as well.

Aside from two broken bat singles, Gordon has been awesome as of late.

I would have no problem giving up Koch if we got something decent in return.

I would take a chance on either Rivera or Thames. Obviously, I don't have the benefit of any scouting report. But if they would take some player off our hands...... I don't want to name names here, because none of us wants to be critical, but we signed R. White based on his performance last year with the Cards. If the Yanks are really hurting, who knows, they might be willing to take a flyer on him. I think they believe in the magic of the pinstripes.

It looks to me as if we are playing with a 23 man roster. Harris should be on the DL, and we cannot possibly put White into a game unless it is strictly mop up duty.

Although aquiring Yankee "prospects" kinda scares me.  how many of those guys do ANYTHING after the Yankees deal them?

Well look at Joe Mays. He seems to be doing alrite...against the Sox that is....

Isn't Mays a former Mariner farm-hand?

I'd give them White.....get Almonte's ass up here.

I thought he was from the Yankees.....wasn't it Mays, Milton, and Guzman for Knoblauch? Maybe I'm wrong.

f*** yeah, get my man Edwin Almonte up here. KW enough of this s***!

I don't think New York wants Rick White, hell the only team that would probably want him would be a team that's desperate ex. Kansas City, St. Louis....etc.

I can really see the Yankees having an interest in only a couple of our relievers. Those two being Damaso Marte and Kelly Wunsch. I'm not willing to give up Damaso, but if the right asking price for Wunsch comes up then hell I might consider making a deal. I think this pen would be okay with only 2 lefties, even if Dave Sanders hasn't proven himself yet.

I wouldn't trade Marte for any of them.

I'd be willing to give them Flash (even though I really like them) and Konerko for Nick Johnson and the Sox could take on some salary even necessary.

If you ask me I think the Sox should try to pull off a three way deal again with the Yankees. The Yankees have a lot of good pitching prospects on there 40-man roster that will most likely never see the Big Leagues.

For example two guys in AAA are rated pretty highly in the Yankees farm system, being Jorge De Paula and Dan Borrel. Both of these guys were ranked 7th and 8th in on the list of prospects in the Yanks farm system last year.

If we do happen to acquire one of them or both of these guys we could trade them to Florida for Pierre or Encarnacion, since they're always looking to dump salary for prospects, or trade them to Cincy for Wily Mo Pena, or another one of their outfielders perhaps. Even though Wily Mo Pena isn't a lefty I still think he could help the Sox down the road.

Anyway that's just my take on it.
