Alrighty, this may be one that's a bit more for the minor league experts....

Do you see Chris starting off in AAA catching this year? Will his offensive numbers middle oout between 04 and 05 numbers? Is his D still something to be excited about? Will he be the *gasp* next Raul Casanova, late season savior? :D

He'll likely start in AAA, could he be the 2007 version of Chris Widger?

He's a guy I really need to see play this upcomming spring/summer. I haven't seen him in a long time, Rex really likes him... I've seen Lucy and Hernandez, need to see Chris play to better understand his ability/potential.

I have seen him play, several times.

He is a big strong guy who appears to call a great game and has a leader's presence behind the plate. There is a reason this guy is on the 40 man, he is definitely first in line for a call up if something happens to Pierzynski or Widger.

I watched him closely in Tucson last spring and he looked a lot better at the plate than in previous springs. It looked like his pitch recognition was better and he seemed very willing to do the little things, i.e. punch the ball the other way, bunt, etc.

IMO he definitely has the skills to be a backup catcher.

Add me to the list of Chris Stewart fans,

He made me take notice this year he bulked up in the off season and his hitting has improved greatly from having no power (1 HR in '04) to 11 in 05. Chris Also improved his 04 met avg of .197 to .242 and his road avg from .207 to a whopping .306. And the strong suit of Stewart is the Defense this season he threw out SL base stealing leaders Todd Donavon who had 62 steals (Stewart gunned him out twice of 8 times Donavon was thrown out.) Marland Williams 38 steals (Stewart gunned him out 3 times of the 7 times he was caught) And Stewart also gunned down Montgomery's Johnny Rayburn who had 29 steals and Stewart was the only catcher to nail him on the bases this season. Stewart also calls a great game behind the plate by the end of the season he had really our pitchers working quick and effective.

Bottom line I like Stewart he is a true team player last year Stewart played through head injuries, respitory infections where could barely breathe between innings and to many foul tips to even count.

Hope this helps

For the experts:

Please chart the White Sox's C prospects, in terms of defense only, from top to bottom.

I'm interested to find out where Stewart would rank with the Lucy's, Hernandez's, etal.

Thanks.

I am not an expert, but I subscribe to Baseball America and follow the minor's closely. I would say Lucy is the best defensive catcher, followed by Gustavo Molina (no relation to the trio,) then Stewart and finally Hernandez. I put Hernandez last only because he is raw and working on calling the game and his technique. He will be in time a pretty good defensive catcher, but now because of his youthfulness, he is last. The Sox's catcher in the minor's are pretty solid defensively, they just need to hit better.

ummm everything I heard has said Hernandez is a great defensive catcher and has a cannon for an arm too. I dont know how he does in calling a game but it cant be worse than Olivo :P .

I could be wrong but I thought for sure Hernandez is apposed to be a defensive stud behind the plate.

Yes, but he is raw. Lucy is the best all-around defensive catcher that is a prospect of any kind in the org, followed by Stewart and Hernandez in a tie, IMO. Fransisco is lacking experience and game-calling refinement. Yes, that is a big part of the game that is not always learnable, but he has superior tools to Stewart and is more mobile behind the plate. Let me also note that I did not get a chance to see Stewart this year, so that is something I will be looking forward to evaluating this spring/summer.

Lucy is Ausmus-esque, IMO, trying to find a better comparison to someone a little more athletic, but defensively, that's about where I'd place him. Sound, well-rounded, good feel for the game, handling of pitchers, the whole defensive package. Not as flashy as Ivan in his hey-day, but very effective to say the least.
