A Week in Review (May 11-17): Winston Salem Warthogs

The Warthogs had an impressive week of play, as Ruddy Yan and Jeremy Reed led the Hogs to a 4-2 mark. Ryan Wing continued his dominance over Carolina League hitters with two solid outings, but only picking up one win.

 

On Sunday the 11th, the Hogs bullpen exploded in extra innings, giving up nine runs in only one inning of work en route to a 10-3 loss. Josh Fields and Brandon O’Neal had trouble getting anyone out, as Salem hitters pounded eight hits off of the relievers. A solid effort was wasted from Ryan Wing, as he went six innings giving up no runs. Ryan Meaux relieved Wing in the 8th, and gave up his first earned run of the season in the 9th. The only Hog with more than one hit was shortstop Mike Morse who had two hits, one of which was a double. Ruddy Yan went 1-4, but stole his league leading 24th base of the year.

 

On Monday, the Hogs had to wait an extra day to kick off their series with Lynchburg, as their game was rained out. A makeup date was scheduled for Wednesday, which made the Hogs series against Lynchburg a six game series.

 

An extra day off seemed to rejuvenate the Hogs, as they easily defeated Lynchburg 5-2 behind a solid performance from Beyong An. An went seven plus innings, only giving up two earned runs while striking out seven Lynchburg batters. Ryan Meaux relieved An in the 8th, and pitched two scoreless frames for his fourth save of the year. On the offensive side of the ball, Jeremy Reed started his unheard of hot-streak, going 2-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. As of Wednesday, Reed’s average stood at an impressive .306, but by the end of the week, Reed’s average would skyrocket to .343. Reed also stole his 14th base of the game, but was not to be outdone by Ruddy Yan, who stole his 26th. Brian Becker and Casey Rogowski also powered the Hogs, going a combined 5-9 with three RBI.

 

The Hogs lost a bit of steam Wednesday, as they lost the first game of a doubleheader against Lynchburg, but rallied for the split later on. In the first game, starter Franklin Francisco pitched brilliantly, going eight innings, giving up only two runs, one earned. Ryan Meaux came on in the 9th to preserve a Hogs win, but an error cost Meaux and the Hogs three runs which lead to a 5-3 loss. Offensively, the Hogs pounded out eight hits, but left seven men stranded on base. Ruddy Yan again made the opposition look foolish going 2-4 with two runs scored. Yan did not steal a base, so his total was stuck at 26 for the time being. Outfielder Daylan Holt went 1-2 with two sacrifice flies to drive in the majority of the Hogs runs.

 

In the second game of the doubleheader, Wyatt Allen limited his walks and the Hogs won the game 4-1. Allen pitched six strong innings, walking four and giving up two hits, but struck out five batters. Reliever Rolando Garza pitched the 7th for his first win of the season. Once again, Jeremy Reed and Ruddy Yan were the sparkplugs for the Hogs ‘O’. Yan and Reed combined to go 5-8 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Reed stole two bases, his 15th and 16th of the seaon, while Yan stole his 27th.

 

On Thursday, the Hogs game against Lynchburg was postponed due to rain. A makeup date hasn’t been announced at this time.

 

Ryan Wing received the short end of the stick on Monday, picking up a no decision, but on Friday he picked up his fourth win of the season, defeating Kinston 8-1. Wing pitched five solid innings, giving up an earned run on three hits and three walks. Wing struck out four, and watched his ERA dwindle to 1.72. The Hogs got a lift from some former Hogs, as Mitch Wylie and Jason Stumm returned from extended spring training. Wylie pitched three innings giving up two hits while striking out three, while Stumm pitched a scoreless 9th. Not to be outdone, the Hogs slammed 14 hits on the night, most of them coming from the top of the order. The top of the order which consisted of Ruddy Yan, Mike Spidale, Jeremy Reed and Brian Becker, had nine hits, five RBIs, and six runs combined. Third baseman Tommy Nicholson also contributed to the barrage, going 4-4.

 

On Saturday, the Hogs only needed five innings to defeat Kinston 3-1, as the game was called due to rain. Starter Kris Honel went the distance, which was five innings, giving up only one earned run. Honel didn’t have the control he usually has, giving up four walks and three hits. Honel did bounce back though, striking out five Kinston batters. Jeremy Reed could not be stopped at the plate, or on the base paths, going 2-2 with three stolen bases. Reed currently has 19 stolen bases on the year.

 

The Hogs had a great week, especially Jeremy Reed, but they hope to continue their success this week. Here is the Hogs upcoming schedule for this week:
