hammerhead johnson
Vasher is a product of a superior defensive line. He is almost always in the right place at the right time as the D-Line pressures the QB into making bad throws. His coverage skills are below average. He makes Peanut Tillman look like Mel Blount in that regard. If he wasn't respectable against the run, he'd be in the Arena League. Urlacher, Peterson, Vasher, nobody is having a real dominant season, so it's not as far fetched as you think. Urlacher, Peterson, Vasher, nobody is having a real dominant season, so it's not as far fetched as you think. I'm saying that he's not a good defensive player to begin with, let alone Defensive Player Of The Year. He has special teams ace written all over him, and I like him out of the nickel slot because he is pretty good against the run. But consider for a minute that he is a CB with no coverage skills. Perhaps national sportswriters are retarded enough to throw a few votes his way. It'll be like Larry Hughes all over again....

Not to get confrontational with you, which is basically what I am doing , who has better numbers that could warrant DPOY. There is no Strahan from 2001 or Lewis from 2003, his numbers are as good as anyone's out there, sooner or later, people just need to admit that Vasher is just a damn good football player whose instincts and knowledge of the game can overcome his lack of physical tools. Walter was never the strongest, quickest or fastest, but he could find the holes and played with a heart of a champion. Tools are overrated in football, plenty of toolsy guys never find it while guys with average tools that have high football IQ's are in the league for years. Rod Smith was never drafted, but it one of the best wideouts in the last 10 years. Edited December 6, 2005 by maggsmaggs

Tommie Harris, for instance, is about 10,000 times more valuable than Vasher. It's not even funny.

At the begining of the year I was right with you he isnt a very good coverage CB but he makes the big plays.... But this season other than making big plays he has also been pretty good at shutting down his guy. Look at the stats nobody but the guy Tillman is covering has many yards if any at all. I know he is greatly helped by the D-Line pressuring the QB but so far he has been a good CB in covering his guy and making the big plays. That being said he isnt DPOY.... Tillman typically gets burned once a game for a big play. On the other hand though, that blindside stick he put on Brett Farve yesterday has forever earned him props from me. That was totally brutal! Edit: Speaking of Brett Farve I was watching Monday Night Countdown this evening and in Tom Jackson's JACKED UP! segment Brett made number 1. I about pissed myself laughing. Well, I look at it like this. Tillman is much better than Vasher in terms of coverage, and look how often Tillman gets burnt. Vasher would be getting schooled something fierce if he had to cover guys (on our schedule) like Santana Moss, Chad Johnson, Antonio Bryant, Steve Smith, Joey Galloway, Desmond Mason, Roy Williams, etc. That's f***ing brutal, not to mention the fact that the rookie Chris Harris would have to get his back. I look at Nate Vasher as kind of the equivalent of Nick Harper. He's just been in the right place at the right time an insane amount of times this year. He should play the lottery ASAP. And like I said in a previous post, he has the makings of a special teams star. Unfortunately for him, we are lacking depth right now at the CB slot, so we can't afford to just throw him in at KR/PR with the injury risk. Our upcoming draft needs to be CB-heavy (Philadelphia Eagles style).
GoodAsGould
Umm that at the right place at the right time isnt just luck... its from studying film and knowing where to be.... Mike Brown does the same thing...And this year he has been much better than Tillman although I dont think he is ready for the top notch WR's yet. As for drafting CB's we have a more pressing need. Our 1st pick should be a TE.... than a WR(if a difference maker is available), OL Depth, backup LB or replacement for Hillenmeyer.
jenksd
This may be a shocker if it actually happens, but rookie Cincinatti rookie MLB Odell Thurman might be a sleeper for DPOY. He has 70-90 tackles (you know how each site reports it differently), 5 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles, 1 sack, and 1 fumble recovery. Pretty impressive. He doesn't study film in order to know precisely where a QB is going to throw an interception to. He's going to be wherever his man goes. Are you saying that Vasher is some awesome multi-tasking CB with eyes in the back of his head? He can read the QB's eyes while trying to stick an opposing WR? Come on, dude. SoxFan1
I am sorry hammerhead but your blatant Vasher hatin is getting annoying. Even before the season started you were ripping him. Even before the season started you were ripping him. All he has done was prove you wrong...what more do you want. It's annoying only if you are a Bears homer. Nobody should be afraid to criticize players on their team. I have praised Vasher for his special teams upside, and I also think that he's respectable against the run. I don't think that he can cover an above average receiver effectively. This is just based on the tools that he has displayed over the course of his career thus far. I think that if you put him on another team, he is Nick Harper. Due to the fact that he's on a squad with the best defensive line in the NFL, he is made to look good. I don't think that I'd have even said anything in the first place if not for the Defensive Player Of The Year talk, which as you know is just pure comedy as far as I'm concerned. GoodAsGould
He wont be considered at all for DPOY.... a course if he gets 3-4 more int and another TD that might change a little but as of now no way. But yeah Hammerhead is drinking some hatorwade or howevr Kevin Wheeler calls it when talking about Vasher. Hammer Idonno if you dont like to change your opinions on stuff or what but Vasher has played great this season and ill go and say he is the best #2 CB in the NFL right now. He isnt ready for all the stars yet but he has been shutting out the other wideouts on the opposing teams. And I do criticize players on this team and hell all my teams you are just wrong on this topic.

That wasn't directed at you. I know you're not a Bears homer. I guess that we'll just have to agree to disagree. And no, once I make up my mind about a guy's skillset, I rarely ever get swayed by numbers or anything like that. Based on what I've seen from Nate, I have no reason to believe otherwise. I don't think that he's a Top 75 CB in this league when it comes to coverage, but that's just my opinion based on what I've seen. GoodAsGould
BTw I wouldnt mind if we spent a top pick on a CB but with how late we are going to be in the draft I just dont think we could find someone that will really be better than either Vasher or Tillman.... or even Azumah.... if we could get that kid from Virgina tech Id be all over it.
