Rex Kickass
So he gets beat down by the left for being too much in the pocket of the "Christian" right. Now the "Christian" right is beating him down for not being enough in their pocket. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10355980/ The juicy bits "This clearly demonstrates that the Bush administration has suffered a loss of will and that they have capitulated to the worst elements in our culture," said William A. Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Bush "claims to be a born-again, evangelical Christian. But he sure doesn't act like one," said Joseph Farah, editor of the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com. "I threw out my White House card as soon as I got it." "It bothers me that the White House card leaves off any reference to Jesus, while we've got Ramadan celebrations in the White House," Wildmon said. "What's going on there?" At the Catholic League, Donohue had just announced a boycott of the Lands' End catalogue when he received his White House holiday card. True, he said, the Bushes included a verse from Psalm 28, but Psalms are in the Old Testament and do not mention Jesus' birth. "They'd better address this, because they're no better than the retailers who have lost the will to say 'Merry Christmas,' " he said. southsider2k5
Call me silly, but I would bet dollars to donuts that if Bush had put a Christian reference on his White House card that someone would have sued saying that the inclusion represented a defacto endorsement of Christianity by the US government. Rex Kickass
Actually he included an entire Psalm in this years "holiday card." Reagan and Bush 41 used Merry Christmas. As did Carter, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman and Roosevelt. These cards are paid for with private money. The RNC pays for them, there'd be no lawsuit to file. Steff
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 03:35 PM) Even with it being called "the White House" Christmas card the RNC pays for it? Yep. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...5113002539.html "It's only Dec. 1, and George and Laura Bush already have mailed their Christmas cards, which are arriving in the homes of 1.4 million friends, friends of friends, non-friends who might become friends, friends from elections past and dignitaries in 200 countries. Artist Jamie Wyeth, son of Andrew, depicted a snow-covered White House South Portico with the Jackson magnolia tree and first pets Barney , Miss Beazley and India Bush on the grounds. The Republican National Committee is picking up the tab for the cards, but a spokesman wouldn't tell us the cost. We'll just have to wait for the Federal Election Commission filing, which spreads our Christmas cheer into the New Year."
Balta1701
I don't know if this fits with the topic or not, but I just have to post it...just sit here and read it and soak up the irony. I am not going to let oppressive, totalitarian, anti-Christian forces in this country diminish and denigrate the holiday and the celebration. I am not going to let it happen. I'm gonna use all the power that I have on radio and television to bring horror into the world of people who are trying to do that. And we have succeeded. You know we've succeeded. They are on the run in corporations, in the media, everywhere. They are on the run, because I will put their face and their name on television, and I will talk about them on the radio if they do it. There is no reason on this earth that all of us cannot celebrate a public holiday devoted to generosity, peace, and love together. There is no reason on the earth that we can't do that. So we are going to do it. And anyone who tries to stop us from doing it is gonna face me. Take a guess who said that. Bringing Horror into the world in the name of Jesus. Wow. I lost a lot of respect for him with his socialist rantings about the oil industry and this is making it worse. Great post Balta.
Rex Kickass
If all these people so incensed about the word "holiday" took that energy and focused it into feeding the hungry and giving shelter to the homeless this December... You think that one by O'Reilly is entertaining...last night I believe, they broadcast a clip of the Daily Show from about a year ago making jokes about people not calling it christmas or something like that. O'Reilly said it was broadcast the evening before he showed it. A lie by something like a year. Supposedly...Stewart's going to hit back tonight.
