AddisonStSox
Try to look at this as only one move. As easy as it is to point to free agency and suggest Williams will sign another left-handed reliever, I'm curious as to how we all feel regarding the trading of Damaso Marte for a first-class utility player in Rob Mackowiak. Felix
Yes. Rob Mackowiak is the exact type of guy these Sox go after, and once I learn to be able to spell his name right, it will all be good.
traydragen
Alright so this trade did happen, Marte for Mackowiak?? Me confused, too much stuff happening with finals and the winter meetings all in the same week.
YASNY
Yes. Even without Myers. Marte could no longer succeed here. He may go to Pittsburg and be lights out for them, but he wasn't going to do that here. Mack is exactly the type of ballplayer we needed on the bench and also offers some insurance if Crede goes down. We may have gotten more value for Marte, but I don't think we would have found a better fit for the Sox.

Texsox
12 reliever for the 9th position player. Not all that earth shattering. It does make the team better by a little bit. Is it the missing piece to a 100 win season? Nah

Nah If Mackowiak won't help us get one more win this year, he is more worthless than Timo
Wanne
I love it!!! Mack is exactly the grinder this team thrives on. Marte was done here...especially for the coin he was gonna make next year. If Kenny does land Meyers...another excellent offseason!
Rowand44
Love it. I think Damaso is done and Mack is a verstatile, solid bat off the bench. Edited December 8, 2005 by Rowand44
knightni
I think they coulda squeezed a spect out of Pit as well as Mackowiak for Marte if KW had played his cards right.
103 mph screwball
It's nice to have such a versitle utility guy now. What really put a smile on my face is knowing that the Sox now have a solid backup for Crede. In fact, he may be better than Crede offensively. Also, the chance that Marte could get booed at home during the playoffs made me uncomfortable. A lot of us were really sick of his walks. Marte goes to the NL central where he can K some flubs. KW is not done yet. I don't like the trade. I love it.

heirdog
I believe Luis Vizcaino, like Bret Saberhagen and Eric Moulds, is good every other year so he's due for a good year. When he's good, he's lights out against lefties so maybe he's our missing "lefty specialist" next year. If we carry 11 pitchers, then we have an extra spot to stowe away Borchard. He did come on strong last year during the second half at Triple A and he was solid in his minimal at-bats with the big club in August and September. Maybe he has finally turned the corner (after getting cut from the Mexican "Little" League, which had to be the lowest point of his career)...I wouldn't mind finding out in Spring Training. fathom
I couldn't be happier to get one of my favorite players in baseball for a reliever who didn't trust his stuff, who Ozzie didn't have confidence in, and who the fans would boo off the field the first time he walks his only batter next season. GREAT JOB KW!
Flash Tizzle
I've learned recently the most important aspect of Williams' trades, atleast those which may appear lopsidded or unequal, are the events which occur afterwards. Trading Vizcaino and Podsednik for a fair priced Carlos Lee didn't apper very equal, but the financial flexibility alloted to Williams gave us Iguchi, Pierzynski, Hernandez. This trade, at it's face value, doesn't do much for me. Marte has proven himself as a valuable left-handed relief pitcher with the ability to dominate both LH and RH batters. Mackowiak, at his best, is a versatile option off the bench. More should have been netted; especially during the current trade market for relief pitchers. Pittsburgh took advantage of our willingness to unload Marte. If Williams signs Myers, however, the trade is justified. If economics were that easy, then Rowand/Haigwood/Gonzalez shouldn't have been included in a trade for Thome. Phillies were desperate to get rid of him and every knew they were shipping him, right? His stats were poor last year, right? Yet a good package for Thome was assembled for Philadelphia. I find it hard to believe NO other team would have given us a better package. Even in his poor years he still was a quality reliever. I would have expected atleast one extra mid-level pitching prospect in any trade involving Marte.
