Interesting story about Cubs' Furcal failure

George Offman who was at the winter meetings and has a good relationship with Furcal's agent said that after the Dodgers came in with their offer to Furcal, his agents went back to the Cubs and sources say all cubs had to do was raise their offer by a "mere pittance". Supposedly Cubs offer was 5 years at 47.5.

Interesting thing is this was squashed by those above Hendry and they refused to raise the offer (Speculation was it was McPhail (sp?). They are comparing it to the botched Maddux negotiations.

Basically Hendry would have gotten both Furcal and Pierre and Furcal was their #1 target.

This makes me believe the Cubs will never win while being owned by the Tribune Co. They make a ton of money off that team, the fans show up, and they can't pony up a little more money to sign their #1 free agent target.

The problem with this story is there is no definition of a "mere pittance." I know Offman said that it probably meant $1 million per year but if it was really that small of an amout, then why should Furcal have cared? He was getting the years he wanted in Chicago and he appeared to be leaning towards the Cubs from the beginning.

If the story is true as Offman reported it then the Cubs made a dumb move, but there's always the chance reality is skewed.

It would have been more than 5 million. My guess is it would have taken a couple million a year increase.

He's getting 13 million a year right now for 3 more years.

The Cubs off (according to Offman) would be 9.5 million. Thats 3.5 million a year less than Furcal got. Now it was for two more years. Because of that I could see them taking a 1.5 mill a year discount.

My belief is it would have taken a minimum of 2 million a year more (for a total value of 10 million over the life of the contract). Thats not exactly a small amount. It may have taken more like 5yr 60 million to get him signed.

Just to make matters that, I and a few others on this board have as many sources as Offman do (offman isn't exactly a rumors expert, although he has improved the past year or so).

Offman said during his live Thursday evening update that "his sources tell him the White Sox are very interested in veteran Mike Myers after the Marte deal"...even though he signed with the Yankess that afternoon.

Oops :lolhitting
