Bill Mueller signs with Dodgers

I guess he didn't sign with them yet.

Bill Mueller - 3B - Red Sox

The Pirates have offered a three-year deal to free agent Bill Mueller, who turns 35 in March.

The Dodgers are still at two years. It was reported Thursday by CBS4 in Boston, that Mueller had a deal in place with Los Angeles, but that hardly seems to be the case. If Mueller chooses Pittsburgh, the Dodgers may trade for David Bell. Joe Randa seems to be an afterthought right now. Dec. 10 - 4:16 am et

The LA Times is reporting the same thing.

Yeah, it looks like CBS4 in Boston blew it.

In their effort to land free-agent third baseman Bill Mueller, the Pirates have increased their offer to a three-year deal believed to be worth over $4 million a year. The club had originally offered Mueller a two-year contract.

Mueller, 34, is also speaking with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, and is reportedly leaning toward signing with a West Coast team.

Wow, $4 million a year for 3 years for Mueller? I was expecting a 2 year deal for $6 or $7 million.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers might be on the verge of dropping out of the hunt for free-agent third baseman Bill Mueller.

There were indications Saturday the Pittsburgh Pirates have increased their offer to the former American League batting champion to three years, which one source familiar with the negotiations said is one year longer than the Dodgers are willing to offer. Dodgers third-base prospect Andy LaRoche is expected to be ready to play every day at the big-league level by 2007 if not sooner.

The Pirates could be closing in on a three-year, $13.5 million contract with Bill Mueller.

"It looks like something is going to happen soon," a source close to the negotiations told the Beaver County Times. "I'd say it will happen this week and it's looking pretty good for the Pirates." Dec. 13 - 2:36 pm et Source: Beaver County Times

Dodgers signed third baseman Bill Mueller, who had been with the Red Sox, to a two-year contract.

It's believed to be worth $9.5 million. The Red Sox will get the Dodgers' third-round pick -- their first was protected and the second went to the Braves for Rafael Furcal -- as well as a supplemental first-rounder for losing Mueller. Ideally, Mueller will hit second for the Dodgers. He did most of his damage for Boston at the bottom of the lineup, but the majority of his career at-bats have come as a No. 2 hitter and the Dodgers will need his on-base ability behind Furcal.
