he Sox barely fell short in their bid to land left-handed specialist Mike Myers, who agreed Thursday to a two-year offer from the Yankees.

"It came down to the Sox and Yankees," Myers said. "I was impressed that the defending World Series champions considered me, but I think this move will be good for me and my family and my career."

Sox general manager Ken Williams declined comment on the Pirates' trade, but the Sox have been attempting to acquire Mackowiak, 29, an Oak Lawn native, for the last two seasons.

Mackowiak is projected as more than just insurance for third baseman Joe Crede's tender lower back. Mackowiak can play every position but shortstop and catcher.

"It's definitely nice to go back to the team you grew up watching," said Mackowiak, who attended Games 1 and 2 of the World Series with friends at U.S. Cellular Field. "I came up with the Pittsburgh organization and got a chance to start my career. But it's nice to go to your hometown team that just won the World Series.

"Watching them win was a good feeling."

Mackowiak batted .272 with nine home runs and 58 RBIs in 463 at-bats with the Pirates last season. While appearing in 142 games, he played in 65at third and 63 in the outfield.

Mackowiak hit a game-winning grand slam against the Cubs on May 28, 2004, in the first game of a doubleheader at PNC Park and then hit a game-tying home run in the ninth of the second game.

Mackowiak's heroics came less than 12 hours after his wife, Jennifer, gave birth to the couple's first child.

Mackowiak has been aware of trade rumors for the last two seasons.

"When you hear those kind of things, you never know if it will happen," Mackowiak said. "It's a bittersweet thing because I made a lot of friends in the Pittsburgh organization. But I'm going to a good situation."

Mackowiak said Williams told him he would try to get him as many at-bats as possible.

Mackowiak made $1.59 million in salary and bonuses and is arbitration eligible. Marte will make $2.25 million in 2006.

The trade closes Marte's troubled stint with the Sox. His hard-throwing fastball was tempered by inconsistency after the Sox gave him a three-year contract following the 2003 season.

Marte had a 5.49 home ERA and had a 5.03 mark in the second half.

He was sent home for five days following a dispute with manager Ozzie Guillen on Sept. 11, and Williams recently revealed Marte sought a trade.

Carrying 12 pitchers could be a necessity because four Sox starting pitchers—Mark Buehrle, Freddy Garcia, Jon Garland and Jose Contreras—threw at least 236 innings last season.

"The key for us is going to be whether [reliever] Dustin Hermanson is healthy or not," Williams said. "His off-season is going well with his rehabilitation and strength exercises [for his back]. We're very optimistic. We might be versatile enough to where we can carry 12 [pitchers]."

Its okay. he was nothing special. If we are going to trade Marte we should go after someone with more success than Marte. I think Rincon is that guy. He's still out there and every time we've hit against him- we struggled. I like his stuff. Bring him aboard KW. I'm sure A.J. will give you solid insight on this 'keed'.

A.J. and Ricardo Rincon? I think you're mistaking Ricardo for Juan Rincon, who's on the Twins.

ie. "I think this money is not going to be offered to me somewhere else, the Yankees are overpaying me, i better sign this damn deal."

Oh well, I wasnt ecstatic about a sub-marine style pitcher anyways. Too quirky. They either dominate, or get dominated. No gray area in between.

What this tells me is the White Sox feel that none of Arnie Munoz, Paulino Reynoso, or Corwin Malone are in the immediate plans for 2006.

Not necessarily so. If Kenny thought Myers was a better immediate plan, I'm sure he'd go for it based on that.

Yes I agree in theory Yas but I would also say this ... if KW thought any of those three minor leaguers were even close to ready, he wouldn't have chased Myers.

See: Brian Anderson.

Actually, after I made that post, I rethought it. I agree with you. I think Kenny's got a Plan B.

Yes, I do too and here are three names to consider:

Jamie Cerda in the Rockies organization.

Tim Byrdak, a guy who's a little older but has been stymied and blocked in Baltimore.

John Parrish of Baltimore, whom Guillen had some nice things to say about when he pitched against the Sox.

Personally I like Byrdak and he might be a guy they're targeting.

Sounds like the Ueckerism, "Juuuuuuust a bit outside..."

[The Yankees reached a preliminary agreement on a two-year, $2.4 million contract with left-handed reliever Mike Myers.]

Wonder what the Sox offer was....

he, ok mike.  moving to new york, giving up one homerun and then getting booed the rest of the season.  that should be really good for you and your family.  especially when the death threats start coming.

see you in october, if you get there.

Nor should they be. Malone is still working his way back, Munoz is a joke and Reynoso has a hell of an arm but has no idea where the ball is going.

I'm overly harsh on Munoz, but he has lost his arm slot for that curve and isn't the pitcher he was two years ago. He could figure it out again though.

If the Sox want another lefty they need to look outside the organization. I wouldn't be shocked for them to pick up another quality RH reliever. I think they have some concerns and its always smart to make sure you have depth in the pen.
