Alomar Jr. catches on with Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Veteran catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, where he is expected to serve as a backup to young Dioner Navarro next season.

The 39-year-old Alomar hit .273 for the Texas Rangers last season, getting 35 hits in 128 at-bats and driving in 14 runs.

Alomar began his big-league career with the San Diego Padres in 1988. He played briefly for the Padres in 1988-89 before joining Cleveland, where he spent 11 years with the Indians before going to the Chicago White Sox in 2001.

Alomar had his best season in 1977, achieving career bests with a .324 batting average, 21 homers and 83 RBIs before going 11-of-30 with two homers and 10 RBIs against the Florida Marlins in the World Series.

Alomar also played in the 1995 World Series against Atlanta, going 3-of-15 with no homers and one RBI.

didnt you know that they were talking about alomar SR???

:)

Except then saying that they played against the Marlins in the WS wouldn't make sense, since the Marlins weren't around in '77. Either way, this article loses! :D

Veteran catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers on Saturday, agreeing to become their backup catcher for 2006 and a mentor to starter Dioner Navarro.

Financial terms of Alomar's deal were not disclosed, but it is believed to carry a $650,000 base salary - the same amount the Dodgers paid journeyman catcher Paul Bako last season to appear in 13 games before a knee injury ended his season May 26.

Alomar's contract also contains a handful of incentives that probably are based on games played and far beyond the reach of what club officials have in mind for him.

not a bad move for the dodgers. alomar is a good mentor. he's been around the block. it cant hurt. the dodgers sure are making a lot of moves. they are trying to make LA a dodger town again

The Dodgers have a pair of young catchers on the way up too...Navarro's already up and there's another guy, probably better, working his way up too.

I like TJ Simers's LAT quote this morning..."This just proves my theory that a warm body could easily have replaced Jason Phillips"
