Bob Nightengale of USAToday.com reported that it is $8 million.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported that it is $5 million.

Now, an Arizona paper is reporting that it is $3 million?

Hmmm...

Anything less than 5 million is a travesty. Hopefully the Arizona paper is wrong; or perhaps Fathom (or the source he obtained it) disregarded the 3 million as the amount of money which would be used next year towards Vazquez.

I just looked at the two biggest Arizona newspaper websites, The Arizona Republic and the Arizona Daily Star, and neither had any articles about it being only $3 million that the Diamondbacks are sending us.

Rosenthal just once again stated that it is $5 million in his latest article. He usually has the scoop.

The White Sox will receive about $5 million in the trade to defray the cost of the $24 million obligation to Vazquez over the next two seasons. They'll also gain the ability to control Vazquez for the next three seasons. Vazquez exercised his right to demand a trade after getting sent to the Diamondbacks in the middle of a multi-year contract. When such a demand is met, a player can not become a free agent again for three years under the rules of the collective-bargaining agreement.

It is in the East Valley Tribune...

...

The D-Backs agreed to send about $3 million to the Chicago White Sox as part of the trade for Young, Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and right-handed reliever Luis Vizcaino.

"We would have preferred not to" include money, "but the cash is minimal," D-Backs managing partner Ken Kendrick said. "The most critical element is Chris Young."

The D-Backs in essence will ship one of the three yearly $3 million payments due from the New York Yankees when Vazquez was acquired in the Randy Johnson deal last winter, and it is believed the money will not be paid until 2007.

...

With the entire $3 million coming in 2007, it doesn't hurt us much since we dumped $6 million by trading El Duque and Vizcaino.

+$11.5 million (Vazquez's 2006 salary)

- $4.625 million (El Duque's 2006 salary)

- $1.3 million (Vizcaino's 2005 salary; will earn more in 2006 through arbitration)

-----------------------------------------------

+$5.575 million added to 2006 payroll

+$12.5 million (Vazquez's 2007 salary)

- $3.0 million (payment from Diamondbacks)

-----------------------------------------------

+9.5 million added to 2007 payroll

That's still not bad. Dumping El Duque's salary was huge. Since El Duque was purely a salary dump and Vizcaino was pretty bad last season, you could look at the trade as being Chris Young for Vizcaino and he will only add around $15 million to our payroll over the next two years. Hopefully, Vazquez will prove to be a $9.5 million dollar pitcher in 2007. We will still have control of Vazquez in 2008.

I don't think worrying about 3 or 4 mil either way is worth it at this point. I think its obvious that at this point in time, the Sox are not held by the limitations of payroll by a couple million either way.

If KW sees someone he likes, he's probably going to go get him. at least for the next 2 or 3 years. If we keep winning it could be even longer than that.

You are right about the small amounts but it all adds up and our payroll still isn't unlimited even after winning the World Series. $6 million could be the difference between having Pierzynski as your catcher... or Ben Davis.

Speaking of trades that didn't happen, the Diamondbacks offered right-handed starter Javier Vazquez and reliever Jose Valverde to the Astros for closer Brad Lidge and second baseman/outfielder Chris Burke. The talks went nowhere.

Wow, Arizona's expectations sure went down quickly.

The DBacks made the offer to the Stros, therefore they didn't turn down the Lidge deal and accept ours.

Meanwhile, the Sox haven't announced their acquisition of Vazquez from Arizona for Orlando Hernandez, Luis Vizcaino and Chris Young. The deal was finalized Tuesday.

Hernandez, who was placed on the disabled list twice because of right shoulder inflammation in 2005, was scheduled to undergo a physical examination Friday in Florida. And the commissioner's office must approve the trade because the Diamondbacks are expected to send $5 million to the Sox as part of the compensation.

The only way that the Astros would've done that is if the Diamondbacks GM would've sneaked in to the Purpura's room and put some LSD in his morning Coffee.
