Padres non-tendered catcher Miguel Olivo.

The Padres' official site reported that the team had kept Olivo and dropped David Ross. Something changed. Obviously, Olivo wanted quite a bit more money than Ross did. The Marlins or another team looking for a young catcher will pick him up.

Yeah, that trade was a steal.

And yet at the beginning of the off-season, it looked like he was going to be the Padres opening day catcher for 2006.

I mean yeah he had a really bad winter league performance, but I gotta say I'm suprised with this. Rotoworld is saying it came down to Olivo wanting a little more money then David Ross. I know who'd I want at catcher b/w the two.

You could tell that Olivo wasn't going to be starting for them the minute they traded Mark Loretta for Doug Mirabelli. I'm not saying that Mirabelli is any good but it was clearly a sign of what they thought about Olivo.

Maybe it's true what some of the Sox pitchers' said - he's a bad game-caller. I don't know, there has to be a reason that they keep a David Ross over him.

The kid's got a cannon for an arm. If he can put everything together, he's going to be a great player. I feel kind of bad for him.

I feel real bad for him. I really wanted him to succeed.

I'd look for the Angels to sign him to a 1 yr deal.

That would make a lot of sense. They are probably going to lose Bengie Molina and they traded away their backup stud catcher in Josh Paul. :P They could go with a catching tandem of Jose Molina and Olivo and let Jeff Mathis spend another season at AAA, although one could argue that he is ready now.

The Angels will suck next year. But Olivo >>> Molina. Jose Molina is a focking BUM.

I agree but the reason they let Bengie Molina go is probably because of Jeff Mathis.

But there was zero reason not to offer him arb. Worse he does is decline it, but you end up getting draft picks. If he does accept it gives you 1 yr which is the perfect stop gap to mathis. Mathis is not ready this year.
