The Red Wings have done a very nice job of adjusting to the "new NHL" and the salary restraints therein. A lot of people thought they would suffer from having to dump all that salary, but there they are in first place. I know this is unpopular, but I've always had a soft spot in my cold black heart for the Red Wings. Besides, the Winged Wheel is the best logo in sports in my humble opinion. The injury occurred during the second period of Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Nashville Predators, and team officials said Ruutu would be out indefinitely. The surgery likely means Ruutu won’t be able to skate for the Finnish team in next month’s Olympic Games at Turin, Italy. Ruutu, who was sidelined much of the season by back problems, played in only 11 of the Hawks’ 41 games to date and accounted for just 2 goals and 2 assists. He was injured Sunday when he got tangled up behind the Nashville net with a Predators player and he crumbled to the ice after trying to skate back into the play. The Blackhawks, who play at Washington on Tuesday, are suffering their worst losing streak since the 1950-51 team lost its final 12 games of that season to set the franchise record for consecutive losses. And like Krush said, thank God for fluke goals. The game winner was a fluke and that one that bounced off a Crap defenseman's arm was ridiculous. DBAHO Posted January 20, 2006 Share Posted January 20, 2006 BUMP. The Hawks beat Colorado 4-2 tonight, the Avalanche were on something like a 8 game winning streak before that. Khabi had a great game, the goalie situation looks a lot better with him and Munro, and Anderson got claimed on waivers by the Bruins so we won't be seeing him again. I always thought they should have kept Leighton anyway, since I think he'd shown more in the NHL then Anderson did. But anyways, Radim Vrbata has pretty much single handledly got this team going somewhere on offense. He's scored 8 points in 10 games and 6 in his last 5. Tallon's actually made a couple of good trades getting Vrbata for future considerations, and Patrick Sharp who seemed to be doing ok before getting injured. Apparently, Cullimore will probably get shipped off to the Lighting soon, as they need to improve their D-Corps. And Mikhail Yakubov scored his first NHL goal today getting 2 points. Ironically it happened after he replaced Arny on the Calder - Arny - Vrbata line, when Arny got benched for taking a needless penalty. From the last Tim Sassone article I read, the Senators were interested in Kyle Calder, the Devils in Jim Dowd, and quite a few in Adrian Aucoin. I'd still like to keep Aucoin unless we got a great offer, we need 1 good veteran d-man on this team. But the fringe veteran guys like Dowd, Brown, Cullimore etc. need to be traded. If you believe the rumors coming out of Canada, the Ottawa Senators want Kyle Calder and Matthew Barnaby for their Stanley Cup run. The Montreal Canadiens, according to one report, might be willing to send center Mike Ribeiro to the Hawks in exchange for Calder. It would need to be the right deal for the Hawks to part with the 27-year-old Calder, one of the real leaders of the team and not a manufactured one. Tallon likely is getting calls as well about Tyler Arnason and Mark Bell. The Hawks might listen to offers for Arnason, who before chipping in a goal and an assist in Sunday’s loss to New Jersey was told again by the coaching staff last week that he needed to play better. Rookie defensemen Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith are untouchables, and so is Tuomo Ruutu, whom the Hawks still project to be a star despite all the injuries. That brings us to the veteran free agents brought in to make a difference but who have been mostly disappointing: Adrian Aucoin, Nikolai Khabibulin, Martin Lapointe, Curtis Brown, Jim Dowd, Jassen Cullimore, Jaroslav Spacek, Todd Simpson and Barnaby. If Tallon is looking to move one or more of them, there are big contracts among the nine that would make it difficult. There has been some interest in Cullimore, Barnaby and Dowd, according to a source. Cullimore is signed through 2008 at about $1.9 million per season. Barnaby is signed through 2007 and Dowd through the end of this season. With New Jersey in town Sunday there was a rumor of the Devils possibly being interested in bringing Dowd back to the Meadowlands for the stretch run. Aucoin could help a number of contenders providing he stays away from more groin problems. But Aucoin has three years left on his contract at $4 million a year, which makes it more likely than not that he remains with the Hawks, who are going to need some kind of veteran presence on the blue line next season assuming Seabrook, Keith, Anton Babchuk and Cam Barker all play. The Hawks would think twice about trading Lapointe, who is a good influence on the kids and on target to score 20 goals, which is what was expected of him. Khabibulin isn’t going anywhere, nor should he. Wherever the Hawks go from here they’re going to need a top-end goaltender, and Khabibulin, whatever struggles he has had this season, still is that. Whatever happens between now and the March 9 trade deadline will help shape the Hawks for next season. If Tallon can move out some salaries before then it would give him even more room under the cap for the summer when offense, offense and more offense must be the Hawks’ primary focus. While i like calder, he's better suited to be a grinder on the 3rd line of a good team than a 1st or 2nd liner on our team. By the team we have a good enough team where Calder can be a third liner...well, who knows when that will happen is my point. I'm fine with getting something for him, as long as it's not a bunch of 2nd round draft picks (aka the sullivan deal). And Barnaby...the sooner the better. All the names listed are fine with me. This team needs to start rebuilding, and these vets can be shipped off to start that process. As mentioned, the contracts will make it hard...but i trust Tallon at this point. I don't think he did a great job in the off season, but i think he's done a good job during the year. I think he knows what he wants/needs on this team, and now he can focus on getting that. The Hawks took penalty after penalty and were out shot 20 to 4 in the first period. After that they seemed to pick it up a little and were scrappier in the offensive zone. Seabrook and Spacek looked good, Vrbata looks like he can play, and Barnaby turned in a solid performance as well. If the Hawks get an effort like that against a good team however, they're in some trouble. On the trades, if we can get rid of Aucoin, Cullimore, Dowd, Arnason, and Simpson I'm a happy guy. The rest can be used to build a team. I like Barnaby, Lapointe and Brown for a fourth line. Calder needs to be here, he works his ass off to get loose pucks and is the THE Chicago Hockey Player. Richmond played for the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League in 2003-04 where he had 35 points (13g/22a) in 59 games. He also played for Team USA in the 2004 World Junior Championships winning the Gold Medal. He played in 6 games and had 4 assists including 2 assists in a 4-3 win in the championship game over Team Canada. He played the 2004-05 season for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League appearing in 63 games scoring 4 goals and 13 points with 139 penalty minutes. Danny’s father, Steve Richmond, played defense for five seasons in the NHL appearing in 159 career games for the New York Rangers, Detroit, New Jersey, and Los Angeles. Anton Babchuk, 21, was the Blackhawks 1st round pick (21st overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The 6.05, 212 pound defenseman had split this season between the Blackhawks and the Norfolk Admirals in the AHL. Babchuk appeared in 24 games for Norfolk in the American Hockey League this year scoring 5 goals and adding 7 assists for 12 points with 22 penalty minutes. He was recalled by the Blackhawks twice this season and played a total of 17 games scoring 2 goals while adding 3 assists for 5 points with 16 penalty minutes. FLAWS: Lacks size and strength. Turns the puck over too often in the defensive zone. Needs more work without the disk. CAREER POTENTIAL: Power play specialist.
