Redding, 27, struggled last season with the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees, going a combined 0-6 with a 10.57 ERA in 10 appearances (seven starts). He pitched the previous four seasons with the Houston Astros, winning 10 games in 2003. Redding will make $500,000 if he makes the major-league roster, with another $400,000-plus available in bonuses. He can request a release if he doesn't break camp with the team. He will get every opportunity in a starting role in spring training with Mark Buehrle (United States), Freddy Garcia (Venezuela) and Javier Vazquez (Puerto Rico) all pitching in the World Baseball Classic. That part of the article is laughable. Redding had one good season in 2003 with the Astros but has pretty much been horrible his entire career. But I guess he's worth a shot as a long reliever / injury spot starter if he has a good spring training. I remember him getting shellacked with the Yankees last season though. What they mean is he'll get a shot to start the spring training games with those 3 pitching in the wbc. Not a bad move, never hurts to add more depth. He was supposed to be a solid #5 starter for the Padres last season. He's still young (27) and supposedly has really good stuff. This is a Cooper reclamation project (shades of the Esteban Loaiza signing in 2003). If we trade Garland and Redding pans out in spring training, he could be our longman / 6th starter. He's implying that he'll get every shot to start during spring training since the Sox guys are going to be pitching in the WBC. Regardless this isn't a horrid move.
