SEATTLE -- The Mariners and veteran outfielder Matt Lawton reached agreement Thursday afternoon on a one-year contract.

He receives a $400,000 base salary, up to $1.25 million in incentives and a no-trade clause.

Lawton becomes the club's fourth outfielder and part-time designated hitter.

This could open up a trade of Jeremy Reed to the Red Sox for Bronson Arroyo.

If they trade Jeremy Reed for Bronson Arroyo, they could try Ichiro in CF but I doubt he would agree to it.

LF Raul Ibanez

CF Ichiro Suzuki

RF Matt Lawton

DH Carl Everett

Im thinking it will be ichiro in right ibanez in center and lawton in left, pending on reed going to boston

Why sign a roid monkey?

Aren't the Mariners the team that had all of those minor leaguers test positive for steroids? They were like the franchise with the most positive tests. I actually think it makes sense for Lawton to sign there.

And let's hope Seattle makes Boston pay out of their ass for Reed.

Am I the only one that thinks the Mariners would be nuts to deal Reed for Arroyo. I'm not a big Arroyo fan and I realize pitching is king, but Jeremy Reed is a good defensive outfielder and will be a good hitter.

Plus he's going to be cheap for quite a bit longer. Bavasi is all over the place. Of course, at the same time, pitching is king and when your in a pitchers park you better make sure you can play to your stadiums strenght (ie pitching).

He got stupid and paid huge bucks for hitting (power hitting) and should have built his team on speed, defense, good average hitters, and pitching.

Well everyone (especially the veterans here) knows how I feel about mr .300+ 7-10 hrs 60-80 rbis 15-25+ sb 70-80wlks 50-60ks and so on Reed. He will always be my favorite non w.sox player and I still believe he'll be a good (semi-great) player for a long time.

Bavasi is all over the place.

That started happening ever since he got the M's GM position.

As for Arroyo for Reed, if they have to give up Gil Meche to do so (depending on what happens with their rotation), is that even an upgrade?

Well, he should still only be facing a 10 game suspension, so it doesn't hurt them as much. And at least he's been seemingly a lot more forward about it than anyone else...said yesterday that he was struggling as a yankee, so he went a head and took them and was tested the next day, calls it a mistake, may very well be lying but at least seems on the surface to be more honest than Palmeiro.

Not at all. I have absolutely no idea what Bavasi would be thinking.

Reed's got "great 2 hitter for 10 years" written all over him...and you're willing to give that up for a 4th starter before the season starts? :huh
