Grissom to sign with Cubs?

I found this little nugget of info in a Denver Post article about Willie Harris:

Even as the Rockies hammer out a deal for Harris, they are seeking to add a right-handed hitting reserve outfielder. Gone are Eric Byrnes (Arizona) and Marquis Grissom - whose agent said he will sign with the Chicago Cubs - leaving

If he is used as a fourth outfielder, this is not as poor a signing as some of you are making it out to be.  The fear would be Dusty using him in a platoon or starting role.

Last season, Dusty started Todd Hollandsworth in left field over younger players like Jason Dubois and Matt Murton even after the Cubs were pretty much out of the Wild Card. Hendry had to trade Hollandsworth away to get Dusty to finally start Murton full-time. I would not be surprised to see Dusty start Grissom over Murton in left field. Dusty's fetish for veteran players is one of the big reasons why the Cubs suck so bad.

He'll be starting at the first sign of a slump.

Same crap he did last year with Dubois. He'd have a bad game and he'd sit for a few days so Hollandsworth could play.

Yep, Murton better get off to a hot start for his own sake.

I see Todd hollandsworth written all over him, w/ Dusty using him more than he should over a young OFer

Cubs, Grissom reach deal

The Cubs will make an announcement today, but barring something unexpected, it won't be about a trade for Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada.

They are expected to reveal that veteran outfielder Marquis Grissom has agreed to terms on a minor-league contract for 2006. Grissom, 38, played only 44 games for the San Francisco Giants last year because of a strained left hamstring and batted .212. He was designated for assignment Aug. 2.

But the four-time Gold Glove winner is considered a character guy in the clubhouse, believes he has something left in the tank and can overcome his chronic hamstring problems. A right-handed hitter, Grissom has a .272 career average in 17 seasons and will be trying to claim a backup job.

Grissom hit .212 in over a 100 at bats.  If they are giving him a major league contract, Jim Hendry should be fired on the scene.

I would rather watch korey play than this old fart. At least K-orey may have some promise to improve, and is relatively cheap.
