royze1
Here's a little somethng on Kris. One of the dealers where I play poker was telling me that he had run into Kris and he was telling him how his recovery from Tommy John surgery was progressing. He said Kris told him he is throwing again now & he thinks he'll be 100% for spring training. He is very optimistic about his future & sees himself up with the Sox within 2 years. Oh and he told him he was hitting 99 on a speed gun. I didn't remember Kris as being a big power arm guy but he swore that Kris told him 99 not 95 like I thought. I tend to believe him as he's a cubfan & doesn't care much about the Sox or Future Sox. If this is true then KW will have a nice option coming up when he has to make some tough choices on veterans with a lot of innings on their arms. RockRaines
Honel did not hit 99 on a speed gun, come on man.
southsider2k5
IIRC Honel never got past like 93 mph. His big pitch was his knucklecurve ball. You might want to tell your contact they are a liar.
aboz56
Honel, even if healthy, won't be a rotation guy with the Sox IMO. His only shot would be a bullpen spot in 2-3 years if he is not traded by then. Also, he's lucky to hit the low 90's. No way he hit 99. Maybe he was playing as himself on MVP Baseball or something. Chisoxfn
Am I missing something. When the hell did Honel undergo Tommy John? Whoever you were talking with was messing with you because Honel was pitching at such a late part of last year that if he somehow (under the radar) underwent Tommy John he wouldn't even be close to being in pitching shape. Honel was advertised as throwing in the low 90's from BA but thats not the case with him and I've seen him a few times back when he was the pride and joy of the Sox system. I wish Honel nothing but the best, but any reports of him throwing 99 or even 93 are probably false. If he is throwing 88-89 I'd be happy. I should also add he had some confidence back late last season and started seeing his stuff improve. A lot of what was wrong with Kris was in between the ears. If he can figure it out, maybe he can turn himself back into a prospect. He's healthy (or at least as far as I know he is and one of our writers, Mike aka Cerb, interviewed him near the end of the season and Honel was confident about the strides he made and mentioned nothing about being hurt. That said, does anyone know if he underwent Tommy John. This off-season seems like a blurr to me and I pretty much ignoring the minors the final month of the season with the Sox in the thick of the pennant race and than in the playoffs. I do know that Kris Honel DID have Tommy John surgery this past offseason. As far as when he will be back to pitching although I am not familiar with the recovery timetable of this type of surgery I would imagine it may be awhile???? JDsDirtySox
Kris Honel lives in my town and goes to our local fitness center. It is true that he did have the Tommy John Surgery, but as far as his health status goes right now, I am unsure of that. I know for a fact that he is throwing frequently... but I don't believe that he is near 100% healthy yet.
RockRaines
Regardless, the only time Honel will touch 99 MPH is in his car.
Chisoxrd5
LOL...the funny thing is I could actually see Kris saying something like that. Lets just say that confidence has never been a problem for him. 99 mph. too funny if this is actually true.
Chisox_10
Kris did undergo tommy john surgery. He is still rehabing a couple times a week. I don't believe he can throw 100% yet but if he is I highly doubt it's 99 MPH.
Rex Hudler
Ok guys, recovery from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months. IF Kris had Tommy John this offseason, then he is not throwing full steam now and won't play this year. I'd say best case scenario for someone that had Tommy John right after the season is a July return.
YASNY
QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jan 5, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) Ok guys, recovery from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months. IF Kris had Tommy John this offseason, then he is not throwing full steam now and won't play this year. I'd say best case scenario for someone that had Tommy John right after the season is a July return. If he had TJ surgery recently, I'd say any hope of him becoming a significant contributor to the Sox is almost nonexistant.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jan 5, 2006 -> 09:32 PM) Ok guys, recovery from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months. IF Kris had Tommy John this offseason, then he is not throwing full steam now and won't play this year. I'd say best case scenario for someone that had Tommy John right after the season is a July return. Exactly. He wouldn't even be in the throwing stages. So since I assume he did have the surgery, my guess is you'd be lucky to see him late late next season since I'd assume he had the surgery in September (late August at the earliest). However, all odds if he did have the surgery would have him out for pretty much the entire baseball season.
Chisoxfn
Just want to point something out. Honel last pitched on August 31st with the Barons. He was the starter in that game and went just 1.1 innings. He gave up 6 walks in the game. He didn't make another appearance after that. However there season was pretty much over than and the playoffs were on the verge. He could have very well been injured in that game, but I've not ready anything on it. I did google searches on Honel having surgery and all that good stuff. JD mentioned he knows he had surgery. JD's a top notch poster and has info so I assume he had the operation. Considering the timetable that he pitched on August 31st, that tells me he didn't have the surgery till September (early September at the earliest) and I'm sure the Sox and Kris were careful. So how well he's throwing, my guess is not very well at all considering its been at best 4 months since the operation.
