Recruiting Thread

Illini fans just seem to think 2 recruiting classes will put them on the level of Michigan and OSU.

i can't say i've seen any of the regular illinois-fan posters on this board making that assertion.

as 101 mentioned, it's not realistic to think that any amount of recruiting momentum is going to push illinois into a position where they are challenging ohio state and michigan for big ten titles on a regular basis. those schools have pretty good coaches, established programs, tradition that no other program in the league can match, and they fill their stadiums with 100,000-plus every saturday. do i think there can be years when illinois can compete with them? sure. they've done it in the recent past so there's no reason to suggest it's totally absurd to think that. but can it happen consistently? not bloody likely.

my hope is pretty straightforward. i'd like to see illinois competing for a bowl game most years. i'd like to not see us totally getting dismantled and having absolutely no chance against everyone but the poorest of teams. every four or five years i'd like to have an experienced team that with the help of the schedule is able to compete for a league title.

that's about it. as for grandiose declarations about our future, i haven't seen any of them here, so i'm not sure why people seem so hard-pressed to assert that that's what illinois fans think is going to happen. if we want to get in the business of pulling quotes from other boards and using that to paint illini fans with a broad brush, then fine. i'm sure we can go to the board of about every school represented here and find some kind of off-the-wall belief. that's because stupid people post stupid things, and every team has fans who are stupid.

I believe that quote was pulled from "talkbigten.com" which is the bigten site of this board.

So far in this thread, Ive been told multiple times Im failing to see things when Ive stated that Illinois will have a hard time breaking into the upper echelon of the Big 10.

I dont know what else to say, but it seems that many Illini fans think quite differently.

My posts are to those who think 2 good recruiting years will mean a big 10 title.

I have no doubt that Illinois has a chance to be in the top half of the Big 10. In reality there are only 2 teams who consistently compete for the championship, and then there are another 3 depending on the year, who may compete.

It also has been a very down year for the Big 10 outside of the Big 2 and arguably Wisconsin, so who knows what will happen next year.

Fort Wayne North's Eshaunte Jones verballed to play at Indiana today. He is attending a prep school next season, and will be a part of the 2008 class.

That's been expected for awhile. Good to hear it's done. Also, DeAndre Thomas is expected to verbal to IU, but not sign until the spring, allowing IU to sign one more this fall. Thomas is a 6-8 270lb power forward from Chicago, currently playing at Chipola Junior College.

I'm hoping that Jordan Crawford will still sign with IU this fall.

FWIW, we only have one scholarship remaining, unless DJ leaves.

He is a headcase. All the big programs stopped recruiting him.

DeAndre was supposed to sign with KU and then Mizzou, but I think grades got in his way....He is a big big boy.

NEW Mexico STate has Reggie Theus as coach, i dont see the appeal either. Maybe he can do a spot on that old NBC Show with Theus.

KU is going to sign Tyrell Reed, from Burlington KS.. He is a 4 star PG, and is Kirk Hinrich Jr. He even looks like him, quite scary.

Tyrel Reed Audible: "Kirk Hinrich is my favorite NBA player. I try to mold my game after his. I still need to become quicker on the defensive side of the ball, and need to improve my ball handling skills. I just love the way Hinrich plays the game of basketball. People tell me that he and I have similar games, but I never get tired of hearing that." - Tyrel Reed

Yeah, DeAndre Thomas was a stud but grades got in the way, I remember that. He committed to Mizzou because he wanted to play teams that stopped recruiting him (namely KU and U of I).

ISU top recruit Craig Brackins drops 28 points in one half. Yay. I'm starting to get excited.....

Well he's a 5 star recruit, you should be.....

Oh, and Boozer's brother looks exactly like Carlos. Except he's a 6'3, 190 2 guard instead of a bulldozing 6'9, 270 pound 4, which is a bit odd.

Jereme Richmond, the top freshman in Illinois. verbally committed to Ill. In two years when the Dukes, UNCs and Kansas come calling, we might have another Eric Gordon situation. The kid is simply put amazing and I am happy he committed to ILL, but why as a freshman? Its way too early, just wait till your junior year at least.

I've got a question for the board...if anyone read Greg Couch's article in the Sun-Times today, and if you haven't, it basically has Bruce Weber saying you need a team of good players with one or two big recruits to get you to the Final Four, I was wondering, does recruiting in basketball work like football at all?

In other words, in football, there are recruiting specialists...someone who may coach a position, but who's job it is to recruit the big names. Sometimes, like in Illinois' football case, that is the head coach, but not always. Obviously, each coach has in-roads at certain places, for instance, Wayne McClain and Peoria and Jimmy Collins with the CPS.

I guess my question is, since Weber doesn't seem to have the recruiting bone like Bill Self has, would it make sense to hire an assistant that does? Does that happen?

I feel more recruiting is done by the head coach in basketball, but it can vary. I know that Davis' initial job at IU was basically to be Knight's recruiting assistant at IU.

I just wasn't sure since it's pretty obvious that Weber is the better coach and Self is the better recruiter, if it made sense to get someone in who can recruit. Or if that is even a position? Plus, they'd probably have to pay someone some fat cash.

Most assistant's will do the majority of the recruiting, and the head coaches are basically used as closers. In some special cases a head coach will do all the recruiting of a player to impress them and try to seal the deal. I would say in college basketball assistant coaches do about 75% of the recruiting, and in college football they probably do about 90% of the recruiting.
