The next best shot he'll have to get a pick will be Stevens who I believe is something like 85 years old. He steps aside and the SCOTUS is a conservative bastion for the next 20 years.

Although I'm not a Dem, let me take a shot at why Byrd is voting FOR Alito.

 

He's up for election in a state that is trending more and more conservative. He's stayed in office so long because he can bring home the pork very effectively...but even that, after a while, is not enough. He's starting to hear footsteps behind him.

i'd rather not see the Supreme Courst become that conservative.
