SSH2005
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...ack=1&cset=true But the Sox aren't finished in their quest to fortify their 2005 World Series roster. They signed left-handers Javier Lopez and Stephen Randolph, both with major-league experience, to minor-league contracts. They're also one of six teams interested in signing Jose Macias, who can play five positions and recently won the batting title in the Venezuelan League. Macias batted .254 for the Cubs last season and hit .405 during regular-season play for Caracas. "The White Sox are an interesting team because Jose respects the manager (Ozzie Guillen), and [third-base coach] Joey Cora has seen him play down there," agent Bob Barad said. SSH2005
Randolph can be a decent pitcher I think. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not with his complete and utter lack of control. 119 walks and 112 strikeouts in 141.2 career innings pitched. :puke Why do I see him being the new Timo? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's the scary thing. Ozzie would love the little turd because he's speedy, he's a switch-hitter, and he can play any defensive position (albeit poorly). But Macias wouldn't really fit with us since we already have two good utility-men. Mackowiak can already play 3B, 2B, 1B, LF, CF, RF and Ozuna can play 3B, SS, 2B, LF. The only player Macias could replace on our roster is Borchard and I really don't see that happening since we need some pop off the bench. SSH2005
The White Sox are one of six teams interested in free agent Jose Macias, according to the Chicago Tribune. We can only assume that the others are the Atlantic City Surf, the Bridgeport Bluefish, the Long Island Ducks, the Nashua Pride and the Somerset Patriots. The Newark Bears can do better. R.J.
This is a truly terrible idea. Bench player or not, if he gets 15 at bats he hurts the ballclub. Maybe this is some kind of joke orchestrated by the Tribune.

Soxtalk is going to find a whipping boy anyways, it would just be an easy find if this Macias thing comes true(hopefully it doesn't). But with Mackowiak around, I doubt Borchard will get enough AB's to make anyone hate him.
Guest JimH
Looking at his stats it appears the spots he can play are 3B, SS, 2B, and OF. He looks like a 25th guy at best, but honest question, what is so terrible about this guy, presuming if they sign him it's merely to compete for a bench job? Dick Allen
He isn't very good, but he's better than Timo and can play several positions. He's supposed to be an excellent bunter. Unfortunately the White Sox can't have a superstar taking up their 25th spot on the roster. If they signed him, I think that would mean they were going with 12 pitchers. He can't hit or field, and has no patience at the plate or arm in the field.... which is a bad combo of things for a position player. I think he's a 26th guy at best -- a minor leaguer. We have no need for Macias with Mackowiak and Ozuna.

Macias isn't a good player at all, and I agree with you....as long as we have Ozuna on the team, there's no reason to have Macias.

Macias isn't a good player at all, and I agree with you....as long as we have Ozuna on the team, there's no reason to have Macias. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly. Ozuna makes Macias a pointless addition. Ozuna can play the same positions as Macias and he's a better hitter. He also has more speed. Like you said, we need to add a righty power threat off the bench more than a slappy-hitting scrub like Macias. He could compete with Borchard for the last outfield spot. witesoxfan
Hawk would be happy. I just remember the Sox playing the Expos once upon a time and Hawk was raving about how Macias is such a solid ballplayer.

I'd rather see the Sox get a guy like Matt Lecroy who can be an emergency catcher and provide some right handed pop off the bench than a guy like Macias. We already have Mackowiak and Ozuna to cover all the spots Macias plays, and they're better at it than him. Borchard is a much better option than Macias.
