First off I applaud YASNY for standing up for what he believes is right even if there hasn't been a lot of support or people thinking it's a big problem.

I agree with genious that many times the parody isn't a racial slur, but I still think it is wrong. I would like tosee the site that anyone from the Sox organization could come to and feel welcome. I would like to see the site welcoming every Sox fan, regardless of primary language. I believe some of the "impersonations" step over a line.

The best way I can describe it is this feels more like a blackface ruitine during segregation, than a tribute.

Excellent comparison. The blackface thing has been considered offensive for years now. Yet, it is a parody. I cannot understand why this isn't obvious to everyone.

This is something I've stayed out of for a long time, because I know that the posters who do it aren't intending to be 'racist'. It is, however (as has been stated), ignorant and demeaning.

Also, though, there would be a lot of Hispanics that would probably be offended if they did read through these threads not understanding what it was all about. I realize that this was a gag from the start of the season and it's just kept going, but some guests or others probably would not.

There is a difference between doing an impersonation in admiration and doing an impersonation to humiliate and ridicule.

But hey, I don't think deleting Ozzie impersonations would hurt anything if people are that offended.

I disagree.

This is a good point and if someone asked what it was all about, I'd tell them. To assume and label something 'racist' without understanding it and refusing to even try is unfair.

I call 'em like I see 'em. This is racist.

"Oh. I've b****ed about it.  I just haven't received much support."

That should tell you that maybe you are the only person who sees anything wrong with it.    I see things on this board every day that I don't like, or aren't funny to me, or don't make 'good satire', but I don't tell people what they can or can't write.  Having a laugh at ficticious characters from movies makes Sox Talk look bad??  Letting a small group of people try to dictate what is right and wrong is what will make Sox Talk look bad.

Trust me, you're fighting a losing battle. Just by looking at who's already come out against it in this thread, anyone can figure out that they will win.

I agree with YASNY, in that these imitations make the poster look pretty damn ignorant. That's my reaction.

But where is the line? Is it OK to make fun of Arnold's accent? How about the Saturday night live skit called "Super Fans" and their Chicago accents? This is not a black and white thing; there is a spectrum.

I don't think that the imitations are enough to be banning anybody. If people want to say stupid things about some category of people, fine. Frankly, it just makes it easier for the rest of us to spot the troglodytes.

That's all well and good, but I don't want Soxtalk to seem like it's filled with troglodytes.

Shouldn't this choice be made after getting a better idea of where everyone stands on this instead of just a few people who will certainly agree with each other?

I doubt anyone would have a major problem with deleting/discouraging posts which mimic immigrant accents.

Oh, Milkman's right.

It *IS* an issue, whether you want to admit it or not.

I'm not going to get all "authoritative" (yet) and say that it should stop, but shouldn't it, joking or not? It just makes the site look like a bunch of 14 year olds, and trust me, it doesn't need much help most of the time.

I don't think so either. Stopping the use of "jew" for "you" in Ozzie quotes was done without incident. Most folks around here are respectful when alerted to something offensive.

I'm not certain how much this really matters but I few years ago I took my Scout Troop out to West Texas where we had an unfortunate experience when one of my Scouts was taunted and harrassed about being Mexican-American. My Anglo Scouts jumped to this kids defense and handle it as best as they could.

Later, as we were discussing it, I noticed that the anglo kids were far more upset than the Mexican-American kids. When I asked why, the Mexican-American kids replied, it happens so often, it isn't worth getting upset over ignorant idiots like them.

So I asked; when it happens, you don't complain, you just suck it up and move on?

Yes, Mr. Welton, or else we would walk around mad all day long.

It made me mad and sad, and sensitive to the fact that not everyone complains, they each pick the hill they are willing to die on.

Why do we have to be so serious all the time anyway. Way I see it a bunch of folks need to just lighten up. Theres no reason why posters have to walk on eggshells when they want to joke around about members of the Sox.

As opposed to running around posting stuff like idiots? Meh. I'd favor fun, but in a more tactful way.

You know how this is going to play out... and it does make sense.
