LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Gerald Ford, 92, was admitted to a California hospital on Monday for treatment of pneumonia, his spokeswoman said.

"President Ford was admitted to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage with pneumonia. He is doing well and resting comfortably," spokeswoman Penny Circle said in a prepared statement.

She said she would release no further details on Monday and hospital officials declined to comment.

Ford, president in the mid-1970s, was taken to the hospital in December for what his office said were routine tests. He suffered a mild stroke in August 2000 and was hospitalized briefly in 2003 after suffering dizzy spells while playing golf in the desert heat near Palm Springs.

Doctors and friends said at the time that Ford, an avid golfer and former college football player, was in excellent health generally.

Ford took office in August 9, 1974, when Richard Nixon resigned amid the Watergate scandal. Nixon had named Ford as vice president to replace Spiro Agnew, who also had stepped down.

In 1976, Ford lost the presidential election to Democrat Jimmy Carter. Ford later served on several corporate boards and toured the lecture circuit before retiring to the California desert community of Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs, about 90 miles east of Los Angeles.
