I remember how cool I thought it was to see the trophy and get a picture...and I could only imagine how a kid would feel. The Sox organization is really kicking ass these days. Its great to see. Is it common for it to travel the way it has been(sort of like the Stanley Cup, wherever, whenever) when other teams have it? I just dont remember other teams taking it different places like the Sox have, but that could be because I wasnt paying attention and because it was in another city. Anyone know? TLAK Posted January 18, 2006 Share Posted January 18, 2006 The Sox organization's trophy escorts and Oak Lawn officials traveled a few blocks along 95th Street to the hospital, where children and staff had readied a parade with shredded paper to recreate the team's triumphant motorcade in the Loop in October. "When your child is in the hospital, the whole world stops," said Oak Lawn Mayor Dave Heilmann, who helped arranged the detour to Hope. "Let the world come to the kids who are sick." Heilmann and an entourage pushed the Sox trophy on a cart from room to room on three patient floors. Dr. Mark Butterly, a pediatrician at Hope, said the children learned about the special visit last week and had been excited since. "It gave them something to look forward to other than daily blood sticks," Butterly said. "It certainly boosted some spirits here." This brought a tear to my eyes. When people of any age are very sick their whole life becomes consumed. Not just the pain and reaction to medicines but the whole situation wears on you 24/7. Its all they get to think about and all most people talk with them about, the world shrinks to just being sick and it gets damn depressing. The diversion of shredding the paper and participating in the parade is wonderful, for a time they get to actually live a little part of life that is not about being sick.
