found this interesting tidbit in the southtown.... note that joe can even make out the difference in kennys truths and lies.......im sorry but i thought that the 2000 team had the chemistry and heart it takes to win and they proved it.. all we needed was a little fine tuning on that team and we could have been winners in the following two seasons.. what i want to know is how kenny thinks his way of chemistry makes things better than what we already had?? and another thing i noted in this article.... kenny says he is willing to sacrifice raw talent to add a character player... is this a f***ing theater company or a baseball team??? how do you win by adding a character at the expense of raw talent????? more to prove that kenny has no clue what hes doing.........

Thomas opts for freedom

Sox slugger has until Dec. 7 to test market

White Sox general manager Ken Williams tried to stress over and over Monday that he and the organization wanted slugger Frank Thomas back on the South Side for the 2003 season.

It didn't even take reading between the lines, however, to raise doubt about how much Williams meant it.

Thomas informed the Sox on Monday that he would exercise his contractual right to become a conditional free agent. His announcement came in the wake of the Sox invoking the revised payment right in his contract, which allows them to pay Thomas $250,000 for the upcoming season and defer almost $10.1 million until a date to be determined.

Thomas has until Dec. 7 to test free agency and sign with another club, or return to the White Sox.

Williams said he felt Thomas and the organization could reach an agreement, but he also suggested Thomas needed to become more of a team player if he did return.

"We are trying to stress that this team, heading into 2003, will sink or swim based on the drive and determination of each player, and each player willing to sacrifice themselves to the team concept," Williams said. "If Frank could adapt with what we're trying to do, we would all be better off for it.

"This is not a one-man show. It's a team game in its highest form. With all that he's accomplished, he still needs to be the man that we need him to be. If he's willing to adjust to that concept, then we'll be glad to have him back. At this point, we're willing to turn the page."

Williams also said he wanted to talk to Thomas about a Daily Southtown report in which the 34-year-old hitter said he felt the new regime under Williams was looking to push him out.

A week before the end of the season, Thomas alleged that it was a "control thing" — that Williams wanted full control over the clubhouse, "like a Triple-A team."

The two-time MVP also said it wouldn't be the decision of board chairman Jerry Reinsdorf to invoke the clause, insisting, "Jerry might sign the paper, but it's Kenny's call. He has (Reinsdorf's) ear."

Williams didn't dispute that Monday, but said he tried to call Thomas last week and hadn't received a return call.

"I have not had a chance to speak to Thomas," Williams said. "There's a report that we're trying to push him out. That is not the case. When he returns my call, we'll talk about it."

Williams said he was surprised Thomas hadn't called him back.

"He has been out of town, so I'm not taking it as a slight," Williams said. "I want to get to him and see where the repair work needs to be done."

The second-year GM might not get a chance. There are reportedly a handful of teams interested in Thomas, even after a down year in which he was coming off a season-ending torn right triceps that sidelined him for all but 20 games in 2001. Thomas hit just .252 but had 28 home runs and 92 RBI.

Baltimore, Seattle, Boston and the New York Yankees are all reportedly interested in Thomas, who has said he'd take a little less than the $40 million the Sox owe him to play for a winner.

"Ultimately, Jerry is the boss," Williams said. "What I do is present our short-term plan of action and long-term plan of action. What Jerry has done in this particular case is he's followed my lead in this."

Thomas' new agent, Arn Tellem, had negotiated with the Sox to come up with what would be a fair amount of the $10.1 million to pay him but hit an impasse. Besides testing the market, Thomas will continue talking to the Sox, Tellem said.

"We have had some very positive conversations over the past two weeks," Tellem said. "The White Sox have expressed their interest in retaining Frank, and we will continue to hold discussions with the Sox even while we are evaluating other options for Frank."

If Thomas signs elsewhere, it would free up money for Williams to add a No. 2 pitcher behind lefty ace Mark Buehrle. Lefty starter Jim Parque likely won't be back, which gives Williams another $1.6 million to play with.

"At this stage of the game, the ball is in Frank's court," Williams said. "We knew this was the risk. Latitude, flexibility ... he does fit very nicely in our lineup. We think that we're in a time where we can do special things, but there's more to it than just the raw numbers. If I had to guess, I would guess Frank will be back with us.

"I talked to a lot of our players at the end of the season on what they see as the next step for us to take. What most of the players will tell you as far as Frank is, they want the man back as far as producing the way he has. The other things have to be talked about and dealt with.

"Heart, character, desire ... all the characteristics that you can find in the Angels and Twins, and you cannot ignore them, they will not be ignored here. If we have to take a character person and sacrifice the raw talent, so be it."

How would Williams replace the franchise's all-time leader in home runs (376) and RBI (1,285)? His response might've been another slap at Thomas.

"We think we can take care of that within the organization," Williams said.

Jeff Liefer and Carlos Lee would be the leading candidates to take Thomas' spot. Liefer's best season came in 2001, in which he hit 18 homers and had 39 RBI while batting .256. Lee is coming off a career-best power season. He hit 26 home runs and had 80 RBI, while carrying a .264 average.

Kenny Williams can suck my my dog's dick. Before, I was just mad at him because he was just one of Uncle Jerry's moron tools, but now I'm beginning to see that he really is a stupid jackass who was totally unprepared to be the general manager of an MLB team.

At this rate, he and Reinsy are going to be the two guys who kill the White Sox.

f*** you, Williams. :****

When Kenny says Raw talent for character he talks about guys like David Wells and how he's learned you can't bring in attitude guys just because they have talent.

He now values the importance of character and chemistry. To me the key areas of character and chemistry come iwth your bench players. You want those guys knowing their role and willing to sit back and come in and make the plays, not whine about it.

Liefers' whined which hurts my feelings about him. I know he wants to start, but what has he done to show he's earned it....nothing. Then look at Tony G. that guy just goes out and is all business getting things done.

We need more selfless guys that will simply go out and do whats best for the team, especially when it comes to the bench.

ok so if we need more selfless guys, then where does the power to make the numbers and get wins fit into the equation??.......i would rather have a handful of guys who bring in wins as opposed to a bunch of kenny williams robot creampuffs who cant hit s*** and dont get us numbers in the win column..........baseball is all about winning and we wont have any of that here if we sacrifice our power for a few charactors.........do you get it now?????? we had charactor and heart and all of those things kenny now realizes that make a good team in the 2000 season.... how come it is when kenny came on board we suddenly lost that for the past two seasons? it was his fault... he traded or dumped it and now he is just realizing that he needs it back???? i say f*** him he has no clue what hes doing and all this trial and error bulls*** is getting on my every last nerve..... either s*** or get off the pot and bring in someone who actually has a clue about running a team........kenny is not gm material.... he should be sent back to the minors untill he learns how to be one just as he sends guys back down to get seasoned............

Exactly. I want guys who are going to go out there and give it their all because they want to win. Not stupid ass f***s who are going to whine about not playing and about their contract and blah blah blah. Look at the Angels team. None of those guys complained about anything. And if they did, we didn't hear about it because it was done in private, where it should be done.

and all of them may just be out of here if Thomas is gone.

Kw is finally seeing some things right in my opinion.

I get a ton of Angel coverage where I am and everyone always talks about how they have no stars and thats really the fact. It isn't that they don't have great players cause Anderson, Percival, Glaus are all great players, its just they all see themselves as equals and don't care about what status is given.

A lot of that has to do with their manager who doesn't buy into all the whoopla and just has them playing ball, not striking out and doing the little things.

Jim Tracy of the Dodgers kind of does the same things and to me they are some of the top managers in all of baseball.

At this rate? I think those two (especially JR) killed the White Sox a long time ago. Only reason why the Sox weren't mentioned during contraction talk was, IMHO, because they have a relatively new stadium and JR/Selig are as snug as two bugs in a rug.

Williams is an idiot. Even worse than that he's an arrogant idiot who thinks he's smart. Williams does not want any players who have "character" or any of his other assorted bulls*** lines. He wants bland vanilla "yes" men who will be his toadies. People who call him a "control" freak have no idea how right they are. This franchise is looking more like a train wreck about to happen and no amount of sugarcoating or pretending will make it go away.

I just got a feeling someone like Paul Konerko isn't a yes man. That guy wants to win and I think plenty of playesr on the Sox want to win and they won't be afraid to speak up.

You know, I never thought about it, but Paul does kind of resemble a "yes man." I mean, he's only spoken when the subject is Frank (and we all know how high on Kenny's list of friends Frank is).

You know they have to paying attention to this. You know they have to wonder what it all means for them. You know they have to be thinking about playing for a REAL organization. Come on people. When the great KW is finished putting his "stamp" on this team what in the world is going to be left?

They are classless...yes.

The thing is I always at least went under the hope that they treated their big guys with respect. They were loyal to Ray for a long time as well as to Frank, but now they do this.

Man, I really am questioning all this crap.

Someone who has some time aught to write up an email and go down the list of all of Forbes riches people asking them if they are interested in buying the White Sox, with all of our names on it, saying we'll throw in like 100 bucks a piece.
