Wow and they're getting Jason Michaels as well;

According to the Boston Herald, the Indians will send Coco Crisp to the Red Sox for Andy Marte and Guillermo Mota after completing a deal with the Phillies that will net them Jason Michaels.

The Phillies would likely get Rafael Betancourt or Arthur Rhodes from the Indians in return for Michaels, something that might allow them to put Ryan Madson in the rotation after all. Michaels would take over as the Indians' left fielder and shouldn't be much of a downgrade. With Marte around to shove Aaron Boone aside by midseason or in 2007, this could be a huge win for the Indians. Jan. 22 - 1:00 am et

I'd just have Marte play in LF for a year, but I guess they want him in AAA to start 2006.

Damn, I was just about to say this was a good trade for the White Sox. However, Michaels is a definite downgrade from Crisp.

Coco Crisp always kills the Sox, it seems. Any trade that gets him out of the division is fine by me. Who cares if it's marte or whatever. That's a big loss for the next couple of season for the Indians (if Marte pans out, which he most likely we obviously).

What a great day to be Tribe fan. Losing Betancourt would be hurt but if they could let Rhodes go (i don't know if he'll maintian the success of 05) it would hurt less. Andy marte for Coco Crisp? Seems like a steal to me. Mota is a great pickup too. I don't like Michaels too much but if you cna get an Andy Marte, you do it. Alex Gonzalez and Coco Crisp. I think Boston won't win 90

Michaels is basically going to be replacing Crisp in CF for 2006. Here's how they size up;

Crisp - .300/.345/.465

Michaels - .305/.399/.415

So in essence it shows that Michaels should be able to get on base more then Crisp but he'll hit for less power. But I'd expect Michaels' offensive numbers to go down from moving from Citizens Bell Park where he had splits of .328/.428/.420.

In half the ab's. If Marte does live up to his potential then this deal is obviously going to be huge for Cleveland down the road but for this year I'm glad as f*** for Crisp to be out of there.

A bit of short - term pain for long - term gain. I'd be estacic as an Tribe fan right now, especially if its Arthur Rhodes they're giving up and not Rafeal Betancourt.

I agree. The Indians would have been better the next few years with Crisp, though they might be better in the long run with Marte

I doubt the Phils would give up Michaels for just Rhodes. A younger pitcher like Betancourt would make more sense. Though with LH relievers being scarce, who knows.

What this looks like is Cleveland sees it has to improve on what they had in order to beat the White Sox.

So Boston addressed a need of their pen by acquiring Mota, and a 3B need for the immediate and extended future, and they have traded both away for OF help. I think the Red Sox season is going to be alot like last year, all O, No pitching.

Fantastic deal for the Indians. Crisp is a guy who had an abnormally good year; they are trading him at his peak. And to get one of the top 5 hitting prospects in the game PLUS a good bullpen arm in Mota is, quite frankly, amazing. I thought Boston's people were smarter than that.

Plus, Marte plays 3B - the worst position for the Indians last year - meaning that he could fill a need as soon as 2006, but certainly by 2007.

My initial conclusion is that the Indians of 2006 minus Millwood, minus Crisp but plus Marte, Mota, and Byrd are just as good as the 2005 Indians.

Another good race in the AL Central next year.

I dont really agree with this, because the Indians are set to trade Rhodes for Michaels. So they are losing Millwood, Howry, Rhodes, Crisp, and gaining Marte, Michaels, Mota and Bird. They are trading good pitching for hitting, the way I see it.

You think they are going to move Sizmore LF?

Isn't sizemore considered a darn good CF? I thought he had really good range. Am i off here?

I think DBAHO just mistyped. As far as I can tell, Sizemore is the man in CF. He is the fastest guy on the team, or damn near fastest. And if you take Crisp off the team, he probably becomes the fastest guy on the team. They are going to have a similar situation that the White Sox had last year, where they are going to bring in a CF who is probably going to play LF.

Unless Cleveland lost complete faith in Sizemore as a CF when he dropped that ball in KC.....

The Red Sox just got worked. I'm sitting here trying to justify this trade or find some silver lining for the Carmines, but, so far unsuccessfully.

From left to right: Michaels, Sizemore, Blake

Marte looks to take over the hot-corner, pushing Aaron Boone aside around mid-season or the start of the 2007 season and will remain a staple at that position for many years to come.

I'm not crazy about the Indians outfield, but, this just looks downright lopsided.

It may be a good deal for the Indians for the long term. But in the short term, the 2006 season, dealing Crisp still means the Indians haven't improved. Crisp had a line of .299/.374/.411 in the minor leagues. And he replicated his 2004 yr in 2005, while hitting for more power. Losing Crisp and replacing him with Jason Michaels while Marte is in AAA waiting for Boone to fizzle isn't a plus

Losing Millwood and his sub 3.00 ERA and Elarton from the rotation, and replacing them with Byrd and Johnson isn't a plus.

Losing Howry and either Betancourt, Riske or Rhodes and replacing them with Mota isn't a plus. They also had to settle for Wickman as the closer after losing out on their two top choices.

I do agree though the AL Central will be a tough race, with Cleveland being a strong factor

Weird...The Crisp rumors for some reason popped in my head a few days ago.

My opinion with the Indians this offseason is that they lost a damn good starter in Millwood and also a decent 5 starter in Elarton. They replaced them with Johnson and Byrd, while they don't suck, they aren't an improvement.

They lose Howry and now they are going to lose one of their other good relievers.

To me their offseason also looks like they lost a lot of pitching.
