Priest accused of sexual abuse in Chicago

Everytime the church claims they are going to stop this complete and utter breach of faith, something like this pops up again where they are attempting to cover it up without solving the problem. At some point a ballsy DA is going to charge one of the superiors in the church with conspiracy to cover up a crime, because all that keeps happening is a coverup.

As long as priest do not have the right to marry someone other than God...then this ain't gonna stop. And I hate to say that, but it's true. Well, it will never stop because there are freaks out there in every walk of life, but it should definitely slow down.

That argument is wholly illogical. Do you really think Priests are abusing children because they don't have a wife? Child molesters are child molesters. They aren't pacified by being married - they'd do it anyway. Any psychologist will tell you that.

The solution is to go after the Church, as was suggested by Kyyyyyle earlier, so that maybe they'll learn not to protect these a**holes. Then the cloth won't look like a good place for freaks to hide out.

And, if the church was willing to enter modern society, maybe they could allow women as priests, thus doubling their recruiting pool (and allowing them to be more selective).

Thats pretty ignorant. If a guy isnt married that isnt going to turn him into a child molester. You connected dots that werent even on the same page, not even the same book.

Reminds me of maybe the most offensive joke I know...

A Priest and a rabbi are walking past a schoolyard, when they spot a 10 year old boy approaching them.

The Priest says to the Rabbi, "Check out that boy, should we f**k him?".

Rabbi replies, "Out of what?".

We've identified the real problem here. You don't know nearly enough offensive jokes. :D

I would like for you or anyone else to top that joke...I'm in the mood for a good laugh.

Nope, I would be banned for conduct unbecoming to a Soxtalker. . .

I did, however, just read something interesting about a new beer that is being marketed exclusively to the gay community. I believe it is only going to come in cans.

Look, I said in the second line, it will never completely go away. But, c'mon, you can't tell me that not being able to touch another person in your life...including yourself...isn't going to drive the occasional person to do something bad?

Anyway you slice it, sickos are sickos, but going after the church ain't gonna do anything. They have money and representation out the butt to protect them.

the only thing that'll REALLY cut it down is to keep preaching (literally) for anyone to speak up when they are molested. But, allowing priests to marry and allowing women would definitely bring this problem down.

You certainly don't hear this happening as much within other religions...or do you? I haven't.

Antecdotely, yes, I've heard it happen quite frequently in Protestent churches. They're just as good at hushing it up as the Catholics used to be. Only difference is there's a spotlight on the Catholic church now, so people feel more comfortable reporting.

I doubt the molestation rate for priests is any higher than for protestent ministers, teachers, sunday school teachers, youth pastors or anyone else that has access to children.

The most direct connection I could see in the "let 'em get married and they won't touch kids" idea is this:

If priests were allowed to marry, perhaps whatever percentage of men who would want to become priests, but do not because they also would like to marry someday, may actually become priests, thereby lowering the percentage of child molesting priests in the process.

I don't know if the number of child molesting priests merely reflects the percentage of child molesters in general or if, for some bizarre reason, the priesthood appeals to child molesters. I feel that some of them use the trust factor to their advantage - a "why would a priest do that????" sort of thing. I think that has to have faded with the number of cases brought to light, though.

You have to be at an advanced stage of evil to use what some people see as a "higher calling" as a means to carry out the emotional and often physical scarring of children. There is no penalty too harsh or severe to punish anyone who does that sort of thing.

Since most child molesters typically aren't the type of people who are good candidates for long-lasting marriages, the "no marriage" downside of entering the priesthood isn't as significant. Being able to work around children is probably seen as a plus as well. In addition, I'm sure that they feel a heck of a lot of guilt for what they've done - and what better way to erase that guilt than to serve God?

Allowing priests to marry isn't going to change the pedophilia problem (although I think that giving them that option would be a good idea). They're simply going to have to do a better job of screening their applicants coming out of seminary school.
