Frank Thomas signs with Oakland Athletics

Jeez, Billyball was really blowing his load over Frank...

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines

"This is what happens when you sign the Oakland A's offensive poster child," Beane gushed in reference to the crowd on hand to greet Thomas. "This guy probably represents Nirvana for us from an offensive standpoint."

For the record, Beane did not ask Thomas to autograph his baseball card despite sounding an awful lot like an 11-year-old meeting his hero.

"I'm actually humbled to be in his presence," Beane said, calling Thomas one of the best hitters of his generation.

And some more stupid comments by Frank...

"I think people [in Chicago], after awhile, I did so much, start expecting more and expecting more and at some point what can you do?" Thomas said. "I really didn't know what more positive I could [have done]. If I didn't lead the league in something, it was like I had a bad year. It's good to go somewhere and people can really respect what you do."

Hmmm, maybe staying healthy for a full season?

In his defense, his injuries were freak, and major. He did give a lot here, can't deny that... but he knows this business just about as well as anyone else.

I have to be completely honest here... nothing, and I mean NOTHING over the past 4 months gave ANY indication that this would happen. The feeling was that he would retire and continue his relationship with the Sox in another capasity. Something happened... perfect timing for Soxfest - a.k.a. get the dirt fest. ;)

Geesh. After last season I thought Frank had matured when it came to this kind of stuff. All he had to do was say "thank you Chicago" and move on. Instead he has to take a shot at everyone again. And in all seriousness what did he expect? He has had major season ending surgeries in 3 of the last 5 or 6 years, did he honestly expect the Sox to do nothing and sit and wait for him again? Could he seriously not see the writing on the wall? His last two injuries are directly related to his size wreaking havoc on his body, and the Sox were just supposed to assume he would be OK? Sad. Really sad.

Tell me about it Mike... After all that was said at the wedding this is the last thing I expected. Seriously. I'm floored. It will be interesting to hear what, if anything, went down from then to now.

Yeah I am curious if there is more to this story too. He seemed to be getting it during the last couple of years with Ozzie as the manager. I cannot imagine with Oz as Mgr and KW as GM that he didn't know anything. Until proven otherwise, I just can't believe that, it doesn't make any sense.

Frank being Frank.

Plus, I can believe he thought he would start and end as a White Sox. In his mind, he signed several less than market contracts to stay with the team. He probably is feeling his loyalty would have been honored and returned.

I'm thinking if the team had collapsed and not won the WS, there would have been more of a movement to keep him on the team and sell tickets for a chase for 500. With the WS, and signing a player of Thome's stature, it made parting ways possible. Highlighting the business of baseball and once the situation isn't mutually beneficial, it's a news conference and uniform switch time.

Finally, Frank, with all his charm as a person, isn't even close to Artest and TO and the others idiots of sports.

What's he complaining about when KW told him he wouldn't activate him at the end of the season? Doesn't he realize that was 4 months ago and he isn't healed yet? Doesn't he realize the White Sox won it all? Part of me really wanted to feel sorry for him that his career, at least with the White Sox, wasn't going to end how he wanted it to. But after all the comments he made, I just think he's out of line, and making a fool out of himself. I am glad he's gone. The kicker is he should be happy he's not here anymore considering he doesn't think this current team has a chance.

He also complains that KW left him a voice mail instead of talking to him. Remember when he wouldn't answer KW's calls a couple of years ago? It was the offseason, and that was his right, but KW obviously called him. Hey Frank, if a talk is what you want, answer your phone.

A rumor dispelled at Soxfest. You might not recall but someone did some finger wagging at Kenny and he cleared up the story. :rolly

The thing is, he made so many comments at the wedding that clearly indicated that he knew he was done and that it was going to be HIS CHOICE was to walk away with the ring. I haven't seen him since mid November.. but at that time he was still in a ton of pain while walking without the boot... The injury isn't healed. And I think he'll crash and burn. I'm sad to say it, but that''s my prediction.

Unlike a few here, I didn't become a White Sox fan because of Thomas. I became a White Sox fan because my parents are. Frank Thomas won't do anything special next year and he'll fade away from baseball. Sucks for him, but that's the breaks. I don't know why the guy has to be a dick like this, but I hope he enjoys never reaching 500.

I assumed everyone in the world knew Frank was done with the White Sox when the Thome trade was made and Konerko was re-signed. Apparently everyone in the world knew except Frank. Considering all JR has done for Frank, and he could have blown him off after the diminished skills clause was invoked, it was a cheap shot to lash out at him yesterday as well.

I wonder if Frank was expected to play 1B regularly if he would have adjusted his workout regime to remain more nimble and possible have avoided some of these injuries?

Anyone want to start a steroid controversy now that he's just another player on another team who is muscular and suffered a freak injury?

And once again, why is it that almost every ex-Sox complains on their way out of town?

I never thought of it that way, but maybe that is why I never got so attached to Frank, like many other did. I am a third generation Sox fan and can remember games all of the way back to the southside hitmen. The Sox exisited before Frank for me, and will exsist after... I have seen players come and go, and while it is sad to see him leave, I guess its just part of the game.

I said it when the Oakland rumors started... I think going from an extreme homers park to one on the exact opposite end of the spectrum is going to hurt him a lot. Also going from a place with zero foul territory to a place with the most in baseball might hurt him more than anything as we all know Franks propensity to foul off pitches trying to get something he can drive. I didn't really want to say it out of respect for the big man, but I really think he is going to have a bad 2006, if he can even stay healthy.

I've said before, if Frank was half the leader and club house guy he was on the field, he'd be a shoo in HoF and the Sox would have won a WS before this one. But, I can't remember a time when he didn't give 100% as a player.

Holy hell, I think we just agreed on something
