A Philly-Mets fight for Contreras?

And right now if you're discussing which is the better trade scenario, I think if the Mets offered Milledge and Heilman, that would be hard for the Phillies to beat, even if they included Madson in a deal, they'd also have to offer someone like Gavin Floyd IMHO.

I agree. Milledge could turn around and be traded for 2 or 3 pitchers. But I don't see the mets giving him up in a deal for Jose.

I think Toronto could be a good potential trading partner...see if they would be willing to deal Vernon Wells...not likely but hell why not try.

I was just trying to look at the Mets-Philly aspect of a trade, esp. if both teams tried to stop the other from getting Jose. Both have been linked to wanting Jose in the past. I haven't heard Tor. looking at Jose

if we traded count to the mets id rather it be with uribe and get jose reyes plus some bullpen help.....ozzie really wanted a #2 hitter with speed and reyes would fit the bill....he rarely walks, but he is still very good

Why would we trade a better shortstop for a worse shortstop?

What do we want for Jose? Another outfielder? Nah, unless they're great, which wells isn't (another swing at everything player, although he has some power; not as good as C Lee).

I'd do it for a lefty reliever plus a top prospect(s).

I would absolutely NOT trade him to Toronto or any other AL team that could conceivable contend. No use helping our competition get pitching.

But even at that, there is a strong argument not to trade him. WE have reasonable chance to repeat. You can't have too much pitching. It's obvious that we won't get the mother-load for Jose, so perhaps we should just keep him.

A new rumor just popped up on the mlb.com boards and the philafans message board about a Phillies-Sox trade.  Some radio personality out there put out an Abreu/Gavin Floyd for JC/Dye trade.  Sounds equitable but also like bs.

I would probably take that deal but doesn't Gavin Floyd have massive control problems?

I see you've posted a little info on the Phils board, SSH2005. Of course their fans think they'd be getting ripped, that's how every fanbase reacts to a balanced trade. In response to that guy on the Phils board, you may want to ask how old Clemens and RJ were when they were pitching Cy caliber ball. JC is built like a horse whether they want to admit it or not. In addition, how many of Dye's injuries were freak accidents? Yeah, that's what I thought. He needed 2004 to completely heal from that nasty injury the year before. Many of his career #'s are skewed by freak accidents and their recovery times. I think the Oz would love to have one of his best buds on the team. However, after Dye signed that incredibly affordable contract with the Sox, I think it would be really difficult for KW to trade him. I can see why they're a little wary to give up on Floyd. Think about their previous #1 draft picks leading up to him... Adam Eaton, J.D. Drew, Pat Burrell, Brett Myers, Chase Utley, Gavin Floyd. It's a collection of pretty good players to say the least. He did have a decent showing in '04 when they brought him up at the end of the year.

It's funny that these Phillies fans question the trade when their GM said everything you need to know a couple weeks ago...

"The team we have, we're going to be competitive," Gillick said Tuesday as the team continued its winter tour with a stop at Citizens Bank Park. "Are we going to win the division? No. We have to improve."

"We're looking for a top-of-the-rotation guy, someone who can strike people out and stop losing streaks," Gillick said. "I'm optimistic we can find one. They're available. It just depends on what you have to give them. You may have to overpay."

I guess the real story to this rumor is that some sports radio broadcaster for 610 WIP Philadelphia named Howard Eskin is reporting a rumor about an Abreu + Gavin Floyd for Contreras + Dye trade. Eskin claims "that's what" he's hearing.

I don't know how the salary works out, but that looks like a nice deal. Then again, if Abreu is making a gigantic salary (I really don't know how much it is, I have a feeling its big though), I wouldn't be so in favor of it.

Thats affordable if we buy him out in 2008 rather than pay him the $16 million, but I don't know how much free cash we would have for the $15 million in 2007.

I'd honestly rather have Dye than Abreu, money alone makes Dye incredibly valuable seeing how he's not making s*** and yet he's put up some damn good numbers last year. Abreu really does scare me, his second half last year was so horrid that I really don't think JC and JD are worth giving up for him even if we do recieve Gavin Floyd in return (sadly he's one prospect that I'm not high on at all.)

Agreed, Dye's contract is awesome. But are you just worried about Abreu's second half numbers or do you think he may have been on the juice? Just curious.
