YASNY
QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jan 31, 2006 -> 09:37 AM) Why? Because I have absolutely zero interest in seeing it.
Flash Tizzle
QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jan 31, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) Broke will be shut out of the top 6 awards. That's very unlikely. I suppose we'll find out Brokeback's status early in the awards. I'm a huge advocate of Munich for Best Picture, but I'm realistic and realize the academy will likely ignore it entirely. Soxy may be correct in her assumption the Academy completely snubs Munich. I believe of all the awards, the two it most deserves are Best Director and Original Score. It's funny, because during the summer Spielberg was intent on releasing the film for this year's Oscar consideration. Who knows what next year brings, but judging by the hoopla surrounding Brokeback, he may have been better served waiting. With Brokeback, I just distrust the intentions of Hollywood. Are they giving it just due because it's honestly the best picture (among the other categories), or because of the statements attached to the film? Since Shakespear In f***ing Love defeated Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture, I've learned not to be surprised with the voters. They may give Capote the best-picture nod for all we know. White Sox Josh
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 31, 2006 -> 09:37 AM) Two thoughts: 1. Syriana as an original screenplay? Uh no, its an adaptation. Why do they do this every year? Do they not know what an adaptation is? I remember seeing Thirteen Days nominated a few years ago as an original screenplay. Huh? I read the book, and they were factual events anyway. Just annoys me. 2. I'll add a third possibility to Rex's two (Brokeback and Luck). If Hollywood wants to avoid political messages entirely, they'll go with Crash. Which I thought was better than Brokeback anway (I haven't see Luck). yeah but it is so loosely based on the book. None of the characters are the same.

bjm676
Glad to see Terrence Howard get recognized for "Hustle & Flow". He was damn good in it. IMO, it's a foot race between Joaquin Phoenix & Phillip Seymour Hoffman for best actor. Everywhere else, who knows.

Flash Tizzle
People voting Brokeback Moutain for "Best Cinematography" probably don't understand it's definition. Cinematography, as I understand it's meaning, relates to selecting the best frames/etc. which help illustrate the storyline. Every film nominated in the category deserves it more. You can't exactly be very creative or inventive in the manner in which you portray two gay cowboys. This is an example of a film's reputation preceding it's actual ability. I don't need to see the film to know there's only so many ways to film a still scene between Gyllenhal and Ledger. I don't need to see the film to know there's only so many ways to film a still scene between Gyllenhal and Ledger. I know zilch about cinematography, but... By your definition, I think Brokeback did pretty well on that. There aren't very many love scenes between the two of them -- most scenes show the outdoors, or small, rural towns. And I thought the way they shot the setting was very well done. It does help illustrate the story and the characters.

palesox38
Im a little upset that Munich was nomianted for best picture over Walk the Line, but at the same time im not surprised because the academy has a hard on for steven spielberg. Im also a little upset that 40 Year Old Virgin didnt get the nod for original screenplay. Best Picture- Brokeback Mountain Best Director- Ang Lee (dont count out spielberg, very tough pick) Best Actor- Phillip Seymour Hoffman Best Actress- Felicity Huffman Best Supporting Actor- George Clooney (Paul Giamatti might get the upset) Best Supporting Actress- Rachel Weisz Adapted Screenplay- Brokeback Mountain Original Screenplay- Crash (picking the favorite, but this catergory is wide open)
