Goldmember
U.S. Luger Injured in Frightening Crash By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer U.S. luger Samantha Retrosi was carried off on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance after a frightening crash on the second run of the Olympic competition Monday night. She appeared to be unconscious and sliding underneath her sled through at least two curves of the track, and fans who were lined alongside the wall waved their arms to summon medical personnel to the scene. A large drape was pulled across the curve of the track where Retrosi stopped, shielding her from view. There was no immediate word on the severity of her injuries. Watching on a large video screen while talking with reporters, Germany's Tatjana Huefner gasped and stared blankly at the image for several seconds. "It's a very, hard and difficult track," said Germany's Silke Otto, who twice lowered the track record. "Crashes are always possible but it's not dangerous. But it is a track where you have to concentrate the whole time." As Retrosi was being attended to, athletes, coaches and officials gathered around TV monitors near the finish area in silence. The crowd, which had been dancing earlier in the day, stood quietly while competition was halted. Retrosi, a 20-year-old from Saranac Lake, N.Y., was making her Olympic debut. She was 18th in the season's World Cup standings, including a career-best fourth-place showing at Lake Placid, and was second in this season's U.S. national championship. The track was modified last year for safety reasons. Test events were called off after a Brazilian sustained a serious head injury and a Romanian broke an arm during events in February 2005. Some of those changes included raising the ice base between curves 16 and 17 — about the spot where Retrosi slammed into the wall. Retrosi's was one of several crashes during the opening day of the women's event — including one that knocked out Italy's Anastasia Oberstolz-Antonova, who probably was more familiar with her home nation's venue than anyone else in the field. She crashed on her first run and was disqualified. Ranked fourth in the world this season, she had been expected to challenge the powerful German squad for a medal in the women's event. Oberstolz-Antonova, the second slider down the track in the first run, was nearing the bottom when she went high into a curve, brushed the concrete wall and came off her sled. She walked away and didn't appear to be injured. Czech slider Marketa Jeriova also wiped out in the opening round. And medal hopeful Natalia Yakushenko of Ukraine didn't start her second run after banging the wall hard and sustaining an undisclosed injury in her opening heat, which she finished. Several other racers had near-disasters as well after Retrosi's wreck, including Canada's Alex Gough and Slovakia's Jana Sisajova, who came off her sled in a turn. She lay on the ice for several seconds before climbing over the barriers apparently unharmed. And Argentina's Michelle Despain bounced off the walls repeatedly in both of her runs, yet managed to finish both and somehow left smiling after her second — during which she struck concrete at least six times between the start and bottom and often sprayed ice chips about the track. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060213/ap_on_...n_s_crashes_tr5
Chisoxfn
QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 09:45 AM) I cannot believe I watched curling as well. They always look so upset, calm down your sweeping ice, its not that hard. I was watching it too. I honestly have no clue what the sweeping does. I assume it speeds up the rock though. southsider2k5
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 02:40 PM) I was watching it too. I honestly have no clue what the sweeping does. I assume it speeds up the rock though. It melts the ice, which smooths it out and gives a path for the stone to do down. Its the same idea as when you zamboni the ice between periods. Soxbadger
2002 in college my roomate and I watched a lot of curling instead of going to class. Sweeping the ice makes it so that the stone moves faster as you clear away debris and make the ice nice and smooth. There is a lot of mental aspects to curling, as in the placement of the first 2 stones, and whether or not to knock some one out of the house. And of course the best part of curling is, losers buy beer. According to the 2002 telecast, that is an actual rule of the game.
Gene Honda Civic
I may be the only Soxtalk poster with first-hand curling experience. The ice I played on was s***ty though, slow and sloped away from the middle, so I can't speak for it's difficulty at the Olympic level. Heads, you need to sign up for intramural curling. Pairs free skate, snowboarding women's halfpipe and men's speed skating (500 M Long Track I believe) and I'm sure there is probably something else. Hard to navigate NBC's website without seeing spoilers so I didn't look that closely.

The only thing I'm not a fan of is ice skating. Unfortunately I could already tell you what happened in Women's snowboarding. Its all I've heard during the sports radio updates (which is all I'm listening to while I'm working on this stupid ass real estate project for school). Oh but just to give you guys a name..Hanah Teter (I'm sure I botched the spelling) is the best female snowboarder in the world. She's done quite a few runs with Shaun White in the past and has an awesome house (In Colorado I think, but I may be wrong). Outside her house she has rails/pipes set up so during the winter she doesn't even have to leave to practice her tricks. And she kicks the crap out of her brothers on all the runs. On a sidenote, I should probably know this, but is Halfpipe the only snowboarding event or is there a freestyle or speed event as well? Especially the relays, what looks like a clusterf*** is so organized. I never really watched much snowboarding until recently but damn it's awesome. If you ever have time, try checking out some clips of Terje (he's the best snowboarder ever) and check out the back country runs they do. They are totally insane and the air and creativity they have in these areas is just cool. Plus you can often times see funny old school clips of snowboarders jumping roads and I always get a kick out of the original borders like Burton and how they really had no clue what the hell they were making at the time or even how to ride them. The sport has came a really long way in not that much time. Plus they aren't the renegades of the mountain they once were, they are now the majority. And yes, I hate skiiers on the slopes cause they usually take a different path than borders due and it gets in our way (they tend to go left to right down the mountain while most boarders are more straight up and down the mountain (not as much going across). That said I think its tougher to be really good at skiing the snowboarding (however the tricks on boards are way cooler and for me I think its more enjoyable).
