The best and worst of the off-season moves

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5328022

Thumbs up

1. The White Sox's acquisition of right-hander Javier Vazquez and $5 million from the Diamondbacks for pitcher Orlando Hernandez, reliever Luis Vizcaino and center-field prospect Chris Young.

Good trade for both teams. By acquiring Vazquez, the White Sox wisely added another quality starting pitcher; their top four starters threw at least 236 innings last season, including playoffs. One or more could wear down this season.

The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, cleared $19 million of Vazquez's remaining salary while acquiring Young, their center fielder of the future, and Vizcaino, a decent reliever. Whatever they get from "El Duque" will be a bonus.

Quietly, new Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes had a productive first off-season. He also cleared $32 million in future salary by trading third baseman Troy Glaus and improved the team up the middle by obtaining catcher Johnny Estrada, second baseman Orlando Hudson and center fielders Eric Byrnes and Jeff DaVanon. The pitching remains a major concern.

2. The Brewers' acquisition of third baseman Corey Koskie and $7.25 million from the Blue Jays for Double-A right-hander Brian Wolfe.

3. The Padres' re-signing of free-agent right fielder Brian Giles to a three-year, $30 million contract and closer Trevor Hoffman and to a two-year, $13.5 million deal.

4. The Yankees' signing of free-agent right-hander Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $2 million contract and acquisition of left-hander Ron Villone from the Marlins for Class AA left-hander Ben Julianel.

Thumbs down

1. The Nationals' acquisition of second baseman Alfonso Soriano from the Rangers for outfielder Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge and Double-A right-hander Armando Galarraga.

2. The Mets' loss of starting-pitching depth.

3. The Blue Jays' signings of free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett and left-handed closer B.J. Ryan to five-year contracts worth a combined $102 million.

4. Virtually every other free-agent pitching signing.

●  Billy Wagner, Mets, four years, $43 million.

●  Jarrod Washburn, Mariners, four years, $37.5 million.

●  Matt Morris, Giants, three years, $27 million.

●  Esteban Loaiza, A's, three years, $21.375 million.

●  Tom Gordon, Phillies, three years, $18 million.

●  Kyle Farnsworth, Yankees, three years, $17 million.

●  Bob Howry, Cubs, three years, $12 million.

●  Scott Eyre, Cubs, three years, $11 million.

I am surpirsed not to see the Thome, Konerko, or Garland deals on there somewhere.

Well Konerko and Garland are still on the same team, so that's why they aren't on there. As for Thome, that trade was a guy widely known as an average overall OF for a guy who was hurt most of last year, so people aren't too excited about that trade for either team outside of Phillies and Sox fans.

If Konerko and Garland arn't eligible then Giles and Hoffman wouldn't be eligible.

Hmm ok.  Guess they think we overpaid for Konerko and Garland based on last year and that Thome is done.

If that were the case...then we'd have appeared on the "Worst" list.

Somehow I get the feeling that those moves will turn out to be the best ones of the offseason, even better than the Vazquez deal.

^^^

Thome short-term, Garland long-term, and Konerko both short and long-term.

I view Vazquez much more as a luxury move, though perhaps even Vazquez was a good move long-term too, allowing the Sox to let Contreras go in the offseason is need be, and slipping McCarthy into the rotation.

The Sox will have the rights to Vazquez for 3 seasons. He is under contract for 2006 and 2007 and arbitration-eligible in 2008 due to the trade. So we could have Vazquez for as long as Garland.

So basically yeah, probably long term.
