Illinois rated second best student section in NCAA

2. Illinois

Our house: Most members of Orange Krush sit on the floor, behind the basket by the opponents' bench or on the sideline across from the benches. Because of the group's ever-increasing size, members who do not get courtside seats spend the game in the C-section, the top level of Assembly Hall.

Signs of madness: Signs are not allowed in Assembly Hall, but the Orange Krush make up for it with chants. They crouch and start when an opposing player is ready to shoot, then spring up, thrust their arms in the air and lean left and right as if on a rollercoaster. The Krush also likes to confuse opponents when their shot clocks are running down. The fans will chant "Five, four, three..." when there are really 10 seconds left. In almost every game this season, opponents have fallen for this, firing rushed shots that rarely go in.

Dress for success: Krush members are issued a bright orange T-shirt with a new logo and slogan for each season. Midway through the Big Ten season, they get a surprise gift, from headbands and orange trucker hats to Weber Grills (Illinois' coach is, after all, Bruce Weber) and bright orange aprons with logo.

The ticket: Who sits where is determined by place in line, so it's good to get to the arena early and wait outside in the Champaign cold. At the beginning of the 2005-06 season, the Krush passed the $1 million mark of money donated to charity. No one who raises the required minimum dollar amount is turned away from the Krush section, which is why the group has had to expand into the C-section. It has has doubled in membership over the last few seasons. The section now numbers 1,200.

Overtime: The Orange Krush plans at least one road trip each season. Last season, the Krush chairs told Michigan that they were a youth group from Chicago and bought a block of tickets. They signed up for campus tours, and members posed for photos with Michigan coaches and players. No one knew who they were until game time.

I was in Krush for three years...and it's nowhere near the 2nd best student section in the country. I'd say about 80% of Krush members don't know anything about basketball and are just there to be "tv whores." After all, what does wearing an orange wig/face paint/boa/glitter shirts/monkey costume/helmet/blue hands make the Assembly Hall an intimidating place to play? It doesn't.

These rankings lose major credibility ranking Kentucky third.

Are you kidding me?

UK's fan section blows.

Good job researching this SI. This article is useless.

Also, way to go out on a limb and pick Duke first.

The main reason I'll be leaving krush this year is because the whole "waiting outside for 3 hours before games if you want floor seats" scene gets old.

-Yes i know i could avoid that by donating more money, but.......that's not going to happen.

someone needs to take krush to a duke game to show them how it is done in terms of being constantly noisy and making a tough atmosphere...some of the time they do their cheers at the wrong moment or just go dead for periods of time and as much as I hate Duke they have the best cheering section hands down

Any stadium that gets Ashley Judd should be 1 over all.

I dont care how much noise the Cameron Crazies make, Ashley Judd would be a much bigger distraction.

SHe is not at every game.

She is at the "big" games and that is all.

It's not by accident either. They actually study their cheer sheets, and pass them out before home games, to all 100 students at the games :-). You would be shocked how small that gym is. I shot some hoops there when the bleachers were pulled back, and my high school gym was still twice it's size. Still, the amount of noise and the actual gym shaking can be a huge distraction. It's also gotta be very scary seeing that amount of ugly people in one place. :P

waiting outside for 3 hours beforer a game?? Chit, at Kansas we had to sometimes wait a week in Allen Fieldhouse from 8am-11pm to assure a spot in line. Not for a ticket, for a seat.

Illinois has a terrible student section, IMO.

They actually have people who try and stop cheers to keep the Krush's reputation as classy. So basically, all their cheers are boring and unoriginal.

It's a student section for christ sake. Let them do what they want.

Inside? Anyone could do that.

The point is, nobody else does. The day of the game the wait is outside for the entire day. Duke fans wait outside in tents for a couple of days to get tickets for a game, nowhere else in the country besides Kansas will you see students waiting for 3 days up to week to get a prime seat for a game. You can do it in groups with one person there, but anyone can take attendance at any time and if nobody is there to report for your group, no matter how long youve been there, you lose your spot.

People wait all day outside Assembly Hall for a seat, not a ticket. No real difference, except Krush is in brutal weather.

Big Ten already gave us a strike 2 years ago when we chanted "no means no" at Pierre Pierce. So no, they can't chant whatever the want, the Big Ten is anal about what comes out of their mouths and can end the Orange Krush if they like.
