Rex Kickass
Air America's New York station 1190 WLIB is starting to see some movement in the latest ratings. Their AQH (the amount of people listening in any average 15 minutes between 6 and midnight) went up from 27,800 to 34,300. Randi Rhodes is actually beating Sean Hannity in Men 25-54. That's pretty significant because target audience for talk is Men 25-64, and with Randi winning in a large part of that money demo is good news for WLIB. Btw, their meaningless 12+ share number is now up to a 1.6 (a 60% increase in the last six months.)

Rex Kickass
Awww. How cute. Air America is owned by a completely different company than the company that founded it. And yes, the loan in question has been settled and repaid. It was months ago.

Rex Kickass
The dude only links to GOP and wing nut blogs. Although its conceivable that something like this is happening, I think that its probably not likely. I don't know what Randy Michaels would want with a station and signal like WLIB's. Rex Kickass
Well, actually now that I think about it. I do know exactly what he'd want with WLIB's signal - clearance for Ed Schultz. The liberal talk show that he supposedly bought.

Rex Kickass
Look on the right of his page. Every link is to a right wing blog. The NY Post also carried the story today or yesterday. There is a possibility that ICBC has decided not to renew the long term brokerage lease with WLIB which will put Air America in a difficult spot to be sure. But its definitely too soon to tell. I've never listened, but if they have good program that can get advertising, they should have a go just like the "right wing hacks".
Rex Kickass
Their commercial inventory has definitely grown over the last couple years. I will say that the Air America business model is a difficult one to grow successfully. Most of their affiliates have to take the whole network, and its hard to find clear metro grade signals that have the flexibility to do something like that. AAR recently lost its Phoenix affiliate, despite strong ratings growth and good sales. The station got sold. A few other locations, they've had some difficulty. I think, on the whole, Piquant from what I've seen has been a pretty good steward of the AAR ship and has it set on a good course for success. But with broadcasting, and that business model that they started with, it would be very difficult to get to a profit without quite a bit of luck. Rex Kickass
All Access, one of the leading industry websites has a memo with AAR talking points on the latest controversy: It's subscription only, but free to join. http://www.allaccess.com "As you may know, some right wing bloggers have, yet again, been bad mouthing AIR AMERICA’s business. No CEO and no company, large or small, discuss its confidential negotiations with third party companies, investors, or others in a public forum. However, following are some general comments on recent gossip. "1. AIR AMERICA RADIO is much stronger today that it was one year ago or six months ago and is on track to be stronger still in the coming year and years. Our audience is bigger, the total number of affiliates carrying our programming is greater, and the amount of revenue we are generating is increasing. "2. It is vital, when analyzing chatter about AIR AMERICA to consider the source. In almost all cases, the people who say bad things about our company’s business are conservative ideologues who have a particular interest in damaging AIR AMERICA, for one reason and one reason only: the political opinions expressed by our on air talent. BILL O'REILLY alone has mentioned AIR AMERICA on thirty-seven separate occasions since our programming went on the air. (AL FRANKEN has offered to debate O'REILLY in any number of forums including on “THE O'REILLY FACTOR” and O'REILLY has declined.) "3. AIR AMERICA’s ratings in NEW YORK went up substantially in the FALL 2005 book. AIR AMERICA’s NEW YORK audience is large, growing and valuable. In every conceivable scenario, AIR AMERICA will continue to be on in NEW YORK CITY. "4. Last week, two of our affiliates changed their format, leaving AIR AMERICA with the need to find new outlets for our programming in those markets. In recent weeks we have also picked up affiliates in recent months (sic) in EL PASO, TEXAS, BUFFALO, NEW YORK and others. Overall, AIR AMERICA’s weekly audience as measured by ARBITRON has more than doubled from what it was one year ago. "5. AIR AMERICA is a new business which has required investment albeit far less investment than many conservative media companies have consumed. Our board continues to be very supportive of our company and we continue to operate on a firm footing in all respects."
Rex Kickass
From today's AllAccess.com news section (subscription req'd) Air America, WLIB/NY Reach Deal INNER CITY BROADCASTING and AIR AMERICA RADIO have reached a deal for the network to continue to broadcast on WLIB-A/NEW YORK. The parties issued a statement announcing that "over the next several months, AIR AMERICA and INNER CITY will seek to enhance and extend their long-term relationship." “We are happy to reiterate that our NEW YORK listeners will be able to continue to hear our programming,” AAR CEO DANNY GOLDBERG said in a press release; ICBC's SKIP FINLEY added that the company "has always had faith in the mission of AIR AMERICA." AIR AMERICA leases time on WLIB to air its programs; the deal between the two parties came under question in recent weeks after reports of a dispute over the latest quarterly payment arose, but the THURSDAY statement indicates that the dispute has been settled.
