SoxFan1
QUOTE(Brian @ May 31, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) Wow, Mundelein upsets Stevenson 2-1 in the sectional semifinal. I was looking forward to a Carmer/Stevenson matchup, but not happening. Carmel plays Grayslake tomorrow afternoon. Carmel is pretty damn good. Can't believe Lyons Township lost in state either. Heads22
Covered a back and forth affair tonight. This is the first draft of my story, so it will be edited, and I actually think this is the worst one I have written, but it's my first baseball game of the year so LAY OFF Baseball season started this week in Iowa. By ---- Sports Writer FAYETTE – Eleven runs scored in the last two innings combined provided for plenty of fireworks at the Upper Iowa Baseball Complex Wednesday night, as the West Cenral Blue Devils scored with one out in the bottom of the seventh to edge East Buchanan, 11-10. “We hit the ball when we needed to,” Blue Devil coach Brian Cushion said. “We dug ourselves out of a hole. It was nice to come back and get our first win of the season.” East Buchanan (1-2) started the scoring out early, as leadoff hitter Adam Myrton drew a walk. A Tyler Decker single moved Myrton over to third base, before Matt Holt drove him in on a fielder’s choice to give the Bucs a quick 1-0 lead off of West Central starter Bradley Westendorf. West Central replied quickly with a rally in the second. Tyler Wedemeier led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch by East Buchanan starter Joe Zhiss.. Ben Miller reached on a dropped fly ball and Justin Steinbronn drove in Wedemeier on a groundout. Nick Robinson, Eric Wolff and Bradley Westendorf followed with singles to give the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead. Wolff scored as Ryan Kerns reached on an error and Westendorf then reached home on a wild pitch. West Central capped the scoring in the inning with a Betz RBI single, giving the Blue Devils a 6-1 lead. The Bucs wasted no time replying to the Blue Devil rally. With one out, Matt Holt singled to left and was followed by a Dylan Stanford walk and an Alex Riniker single. Westendorf was able to induce an infield fly to get the second out of the inning with the bases loaded, but he was hurt by his defense, as two straight Blue Devil errors allowed all three baserunners to score, cutting the West Central lead to 6-4. Both teams went down relatively quietly in the next two innings before East Buchanan rallied again in the sixth. Chris Reck and Myrton both singled and Myrton was driven in on a Decker fielder’s choice. Matt Holt drew a walk before Westendorf was replaced by centerfielder Eric Wolff on the mound. Another run scored on a Dylan Stanford fielder’s choice, and both Holt and Stanford advanced a base on a wild pitch. Wolff was then called for a balk, giving East Buchanan the lead. Stanford would be driven in on an Alex Riniker single to give East Buchanan an 8-6 lead, but Riniker was then caught stealing, ending the rally. The bottom of the sixth started with a Nick Robinson single off of East Buchanan reliever Adam Myrton and two quick outs before West Central sparked another rally. Ryan Kerns doubled deep to left-center field to drive in Robinson and he then scored as Nathan Steinbronn reached on an error, tying the game. Travis Betz then came up just short of the fence, driving in Steibronn with a triple to centerfield. Betz then scored on a Wedemeier single, giving the Blue Devils a10-8 lead. East Buchanan would answer back immediately in the top of the seventh. Zhiss and Trevor Franck would reach on a walk and a fielder’s choice, respectively, before both scoring on an error with two outs, tying the game 10-10. West Central attacked quickly in the bottom of the seventh with the help of the East Buchanan defense. Justin Steinbronn reached first on a bobbled grounder and moved to second on a Robinson sacrifice bunt. Eric Wolff would ultimately earn himself a win, singling to the outfield and driving in Steinbronn to give the Blue Devils an 11-10 win. “We struggled right away with our pitching,” said East Buchanan coach Jerry Alden. “We definitely need more consistent defense. Adam (Myrton) kept us in it, and he’s one of our big guys, but we can’t make errors, and we were hurt by it. “We hit the ball well tonight,” said Blue Devil coach Cushion. “We had some problems with fielding and (Bradley) Westendorf lost the strike zone later in the game. It was a tough situation for (Eric) Wolff to come into, but he pitched well enough to get it done.’ West Central next plays (tonight) Friday night at home against Clayton Ridge, while East Buchanan plays on June 5th at Springville. Brian
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 31, 2006 -> 10:53 PM) Carmel is pretty damn good. Can't believe Lyons Township lost in state either. Yes they are. Matt Diedrich, their ace is set to go in the sectional final against Stevenson. Mundelein is tough though. Good arms. Diedrich is going to Northwestern on a full ride. He is 9-0 this season with a no-no under his belt. ERA is miniscule. Soft tossing lefty. Doesn't throw hard but has awesome control.
farmteam
Northwestern always farms out Carmel real well. Also, Heads, is it really the "West CENRAL Blue Devils?"
